I hadn't either when I did the transcription, so I googled it and learned what it meant. I'm not aware of any survivors, and there is no reference to them in Pollock's book on patterns.
Looking over the letters, there is no definite statement that the blanks were run through the presses. There is a strong implication though because the mint director asks the Philly mint super for 300 samples. If 300 , maybe 30,000, had been coined, and some sent to the director and perhaps some to GE, seems like a few would have survived ... but maybe not. Cal
Yes they were real but for 1974. 1 million were struck then destroyed except 12 each. But I know what you meant.
When checking out questionable items a scale is cheaper, rare earth magnet, calipers and then getting another option from a metal detector with a good meter usually uncovers all the answers.
