I consider that an FH4 since the horseman is not on the ground yet. On FH1, the head of the horse should be forward rather than tucked and the rider touches the ground in front of the horse than remaining on it. There are intermediates of all the types and versions like the FH2 'struggling to his feet' that I would have given a separate number. I will be interested in hearing Randy's take on this. He is our FH person.
oh ok, i see, i wondered about that, the rider on mine looked more like FH1, but i didn't think he was actually on the ground and did not notice the difference in the horses head when i was comparing mine to those pics on your site, but now that you pointed it out i can see the difference, cool thanks... now to recheck attribution, the one i have is from dealer which i did find on wildwinds..
Hurray! I am so glad somebody started a Fallen Horseman thread - I just got my first one (that is not unidentifiable crud). It came in an unattributed lot and I had a heck of a time attributing it. Thanks to this thread, I can now say with shaky confidence that it is FH 3: Constantius II Æ 17 (c. 355-361 A.D.) Siscia Mint DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust r. / FEL TEMPREPARATIO soldier spearing fallen horseman, bare-headed, reaching backwards, M in field; Gamma SISΔ in exergue. RIC VIII Siscia 372. (2.27 grams / 17 mm)
update: i sent a note and pics of my coin to Dane at Helvetica who is the administrator of Wildwinds.com. because i could not match it up on her xls fallen horseman files from the Helvetica site. she confirmed the mint mark as TS delta star and here is the correct attribution, Constantius II, DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, holding globe. FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, soldier spearing fallen horseman who is wearing a Phrygian helmet, slumped forwards, clutching horse's neck, close to the ground. Mintmark TS delta star RIC VIII Thessalonica 115. Scarce. this (my) coin is now listed on Wildwinds....
