Hi Richard. Nice place over here and it's good to see other Aussie coin collectors. Here's a pic of one of the best decimal errors from oz. 2000 $1/10c mule. The obverse has a double rim because it was struck with a 10c obverse which is smaller than the dollar.
Secretsquirrel, are you aware of the latest medal-coin joint issue between Aussie & New Zealand, which commemorates the 90th Anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli? They are $1 & $10 coloured medal coins, with the $10 being in .999 fine silver. Aidan.
I haven't really taken any notice with issues like this as i usually stick to circulation variety and error coins. Is there anything you wish to know about it as i can check the Aussie Coin Forum to see what's been posted about it for you.
Ken,do you collect the coins of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands & the Hutt River Province Principality as a sideline to your Aussie collection? I have got the 1977 5c. coin from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, plus some coins & the notes from the Hutt River Province Principality. Aidan.
No it's hard to be able to afford anything when concentrating on the Aussie varieties alone without errors too. This also covers the Pre-Decimal varieties and errors so it's a full time job so to speak. Anything i get in circulation though i will keep so i guess you could call that a sideline. Mostly NZ coins are passed through in our change. We had a bit of a discussion about the Cocos (Keeling) Island coins recently due to a link posted about the recent so called uncirculated coin set. These "coins" are no more than tokens. Hutt River coins and notes i thought about for a while but decided against it. The Hutt River PNC's though i would collect as they used both Unc and Proof Aussie coins in them.
Ken,we get a lot of Aussie 5c.,10c.,& 20c. coins over here as well. I have always had an affection for the Hutt River Province Principality's coins,as Prince Leonard is an example of a self-made interesting character.Yes,he even has his own Knighthoods & a hereditary peerage as well. Aidan.
At least you guys have the size of the $1 and $2 around the right way Sometimes i will get a NZ $2 passed over as an Aussie $1 which is good for paying for coins i buy from NZ.
Well,Ken,shortly after New Zealand released the 1990 $1 & $2 coins in February 1991,a friend of mine dared me to pass an Aussie $1 coin in the school tuckshop.I bought a chocolate bar during the morning break. The guy who ran the tuckshop came up to me at lunchtime & told me off -just for passing an Aussie $1!.
lol. That's probably because AU$1 is less than NZ$2 and he had no way of using it. For me if i get passed a NZ$2 i don't mind as i make a profit and can use it.
Ken,I can guess that you get a lot of commemorative 20c. & 50c. coins in your change, especially those Federation Centenary ones. The Aussies were not the first to issue a lot of circulating commemorative coins in one year.I think that they were 'borrowing' an idea from such British Commonwealth countries as South Africa,India,& Canada, among others. Aidan.
