Actually, this is exactly what the US did. The US/Coalition gov't designed new notes that are already in circulation. The reprinting of Saddam dinars was a stopgap betweem the old regime and the newly designed notes. I tried to get one of the US Saddam notes - I assumed there was no difference beteen the old and the reprints, other than a letter that might accompany the US one from the Iraqi bank. However, the only reply I got was months later, offering me old Saddam notes at rediculously inflated prices (and "cash only" for payment - yeah right!!). The envelope was a keeper, though - a registered letter sent from occupied Bagdhad with some great stamps and postmarks.
Iraq & Zimbabwe. The American-printed Saddam Hussein 10,000 Dinars is dated AH1423 (2003). Here is a list of the Zimbanwean notes that I have got in my collection; 1983 $2. 1994 $2. 1983 $5. 1997 $5. 1994 $10. 1997 $10. 1983 $20. 1997 $20. 1995 $100. & 2003 $20,000 Bearer Cheque. (Note; The 1980 & 1982 issues inscribed 'Salisbury' are very difficult to find). Here is a list of Zimbabwean Postal Orders; 1994 10c. Harare 18 OCT 1994. 1994 20c. Harare 18 OCT 1994. 1994 30c. Harare 18 OCT 1994. 1994 40c. Harare 18 OCT 1994. 1994 50c. Harare 18 OCT 1994. (Note; These are a mauve colour). 2004 $50 Harare 22 MAR 04. (Note; This is green & red).
I would like to get some Postal Orders issued by the British Field Post Offices in Iraq.I have got ones issued at the British Field Post Offices in Pristina (Kosovo),Kabul (Afghanistan),& Zagreb (Croatia). Aidan.
The American-printed Saddam Hussein 10,000 Dinars is not yet listed in Pick, but the current series of Iraqi notes are listed. I wish that Pick would list the Zimbabwean Bearer Cheques,as there are collectors, especially those collecting British Commonwealth notes like myself, who are unaware of their existence. Aidan.
no information about coins/banknotes info on notes, but not coins notes info on notes and coins info on notes and coins new notes and coins, only nothing found on-line
Some very basic info on North Korea: http://www.intrafin-eu.com/english/Services/Information/Currencies/Korea_(North).htm and an interesting tidbit from a travel agency website:
Four Saddam Iraqi Fils.. Two Syrian Pounds.. an Iranian rial.. Cuban 5 centavos.. Sudan 5 Millim Zimbabwe 1 Cent Myanmar 1 Pya Although, I'd have to say the Axis of Evil is pretty much only limited to Iraq, Iran and N. Korea. Everything else is just a second thought.
Tre,the other countries that have since been named are members of the 'Outposts of Tyranny' as described in a recent speech by Condoleeza Rice. Both Zimbabwe & Burma are directly named. Aidan.
Then in anticipation of the next outpost of tyranny, I may want to add a Nepal Rupee. It's not one now, but it probably could be soon.
Tre,you might as well add a New Zealand coin to your Axis of Evil & Outpost of Tyranny collection,as the politicians over here are so corrupt,as they pass legislation & are totally ignorant of public opinion.Corruption is a huge problem,& it could end up being as bad as the corruption of the dictatorship in Zimbabwe. Aidan.
Tre,Nepal is not an Outpost of Tyranny, whereas,Ireland is,as there is still a lot of support for Sinn Fein/I.R.A.'s campaign of mass murder & ethnic cleansing from a lot of narrow-minded people. The same story applies to the Vatican City.Nepal is a very loyal ally in the fight against terrorism,as the Maoists are like the Khmer Rouge & the Viet Cong. Aidan.
If NZ makes it to the list, I do have a couple $5 banknotes. They are the ones showing Sir Edmund Hillary, and I got them autographed by him. Great collectables.
Sir Edmund Hilary is the only non-Royal personage that has been depicted on New Zealand currency.JBK,you had better hang onto those New Zealand paper $5 notes,as they are very good items. Nowadays, one sees very few paper notes,if ever. Aidan.
??? Don't they use currency there? Or do you mean, they have been replaced with plastic notes? I wanted to get some of the plastic Hillaries to ask him to sign them also, but he is not signing like he used to from what I hear. I also saved one of the Hillary notes unsigned, in "mint condition" for the paper money collection. I imaginbe paper money collectors would not appreciate the "writing" on ther other ones, despite the fact that it was Sir Ed himself who wrote it.
JBK,the plastic notes are very difficult to write on.New Zealand has had plastic notes since 1999.The date is the first 2 numbers after the prefix in the serial number. Therefore '99' is the date code for '1999'.Sir Edmund Hilary is getting on in years. He is nearly 86 years old. Aidan.
Thanks for the hint on writing on the plastic. You might have saved me from spending some money unnecessarily. I assumed that a Sharpie (writes on anything) would work, but maybe I should test it on a cheaper note (Romania or something) first. Sir Ed is indeed getting up there, but so far he has not totally shut off his fan mail. In another hobby, I have a collection of autogrpahed quotations. Hillary's is one of my top favorites: "It's not the mountain we conquer but ourselves."
