I tried to vote but it told me I already voted. I have been collecting all my life. My grandmother started my collection before I was born. 23 years now. Ive really got into coins that are still in circulation lately. -Bobby
Well let's see - I started in 1960. But that makes me sooooooo old that I can't remember how to count that high
"Old People!?" Well! I started as a ninth grader, in 1956. I also remember the year because that's when Mickey won the Triple Crown. That might mean something to you other Old People.
I started in 1956 when I was 6 years old. Our landlord brought me a handful of old Indian Head pennies and that changed my world forever.
woohoo...one more for the old people LOL!! Although I dont like to call myself a collector since I dont collect any particular coin or series. I have done the buy and sell thing but that was in the 70's and mostly bulk silver. I guess I am just a hoarder LOL!!
Well, don't start calling me "Pop". And give us oldsters the respect we deserve. (And don't run away with that one either... ) I think I started about 1950 (I was a very old five) when I was watching my grandmother, a church treasurer sorting coins from the donations envelopes. She'd set certain ones aside, the replace them from her purse. When I wondered why she did that, she showed me her not-unimpressive collection of circulated (yet uncataloged) coins. But, the hook wasn't fully set until she showed me an 1862 3-cent piece someone had used instead of a dime. She then gave me that 3-center and I've never looked back. I wish I could say I still had that coin, but I was badly robbed 25 years ago (ex-wife) and it disappeared along with many other collectibles.
I am 44...born a radical liberal coin collector that wanted everything from "Save the Owls" on coins to "Give Peace a Chance". Started collecting coins at age 10. Then I grew up, got a job, started paying taxes, and started to ask where does all my tax money go? Then I got educated in the real world (AFTER college) and now am a "reborn" conservative collector. I just shank my head as I look back on my high school days into college when I thought I knew everything. How my father put up with me I will never know!?! As Winston Churchill stated so perfectly, "If you are not a liberal by the age of 20, you have no heart...if you are not a conservative by the age of 40, you have no brain." Looking back...he is SOOOOO right! You young collectors out there, remember...we have been doing this alot longer than you and we all started out like you. Just wait in 20 years when some hot shot starts calling you old. At least you have the benefit of this forum. Us old guys had to read and learn from the school of hard knocks. But wait a minute!...I am only 44 and I still can whip most of your butts. At 6'5" and 255, I have battled ugly offensive/defensive lineman all the way from Pop Warner to college. 44!?! I am just starting to live and now I can afford many of those coins that I could only dream about when I was a ten-year-old paperboy-collecting-kid. And for Morgan Fred...I feel for you. After reading how ex-wifes go after coin sets for the sole purpose of liquidation ($$$$$) with no regard to how you acquired the coin(s). I still am amazed that most ex-wifes are still living. Got to go...I feel a mid life crisis coming on!
Well, with all you "Old" guys talking about how it was way back then, I've just now stopped laughing. Guess you know that most of you are just barely out of "whipper snapper" stage. How about starting in about 1930 at the side of my Grandfather. Talk about a tough teacher.
I started when I was 6 and now I'm 27, so I'm in the 20+ category, but my guess is that I'm not technically old until I'm 30, so 2.5 years to go. (hopefully, your dad is more than 27) BTW, when I was in high school I had a friend who in as seriousness said, "After you turn 30 you are old and have no reason to keep living. I guess I'll just kill myself then, so I don't have to go through 50 years of dying." As I'm sitting here remembering that conversation, I can't help laughing at how much we (and all teens, I suppose) thought we had the world figured out. Actually, I'm looking forward to 30 and 40 and 50. It should be fun. (I'm only 1/3 done with my life, but I plan on enjoying the next 2/3)
I have been collecting coins since 1986.I started to collect coins from all over the world, but in recent years,I have specialised in collecting coins from all over the British Commonwealth,& have branched out into collecting British Commonwealth banknotes, postal notes & postal orders. Aidan.
I started around 1963 at 5 yrs old. The first coins collected were franklin halves, they were 50 cents each but very expensive. Spent many days from 8 to 15 years old getting rolls of pennies at the bank and looking for wheaties. My neighbor had a moderate collection and I used to get 2 or 3 dollars and go to his house, seemed to always be at suppertime, and he would have the patience to let me peruse his collection for hours before buying a BU 55 wheat or a silver dime or 2. Once he gave me an 1820 bust dime very worn for 10 cents as long as I promised to keep it forever, I still have it in a special place in my collection.
Age is a state of being....nothing you can do about that. But old? Old is a state of mind. You can be 18 and be "old", and you can be 90 and still a kid at heart. Have hit my 30's and feel like I'm just hitting my stride. As for coins, I've been collecting since I was 5. I recall having a "HUGE" hoard of pennies back then, totaling $1.83. Only reason I remember is that my grandmother had given me a plastic food container to store them in and I wrote the total on the top......I still have that original "collection" and its still in the same container. I was also a military brat so I started collecting coins from the countries I've lived in. (mostly asia) Nothing serious, just tried to get "one of each" denomination.
