I will be taking a trip to Las Vegas next weekend and one of the things I am most looking forward to is looking at all the coins! Im HOPING HOPING HOPING that I will be able to run into some 2005 nickels. Maybe come up on some rolls there. Maybe Not. Any thoughts on coins out of Vegas. First thing that comes to my mind is that they are VERY circulated. Put through 1000s of machines Im sure they are not in mint condition by far. But Im interested to see what I come across in the nickels, quarters, and dollars. I believe they play with Ike Dollars, not sure if they use Sacs for anything. I think this will help me a lot in vegas becasue I will spend time looking at the money instead of spending it I also collect Poker chips so I will be getting a lot of those also. So I ask you, Got an Coin related Vegas stories? Find a diamond in the rough? Any advice for me? Ways of getting coins I may not know of? Any insight is well appreciated! -Bobby
All the Vegas casinos I played slots in don't use dollars anymore. They converted to dollar tokens many years ago. Now I noticed that they are converting the slot machines to spit out payment slips that you redeem at the cashier. Soon that great old CLATTER of the coins (or tokens) will be gone. There may be some of the older casinos somewhere in Vegas or Nevada that still use real dollars. Maybe some locals can let us know. Here in Indiana, the casinos are even using tokens instead of quarters anymore. Now you have to stand in those long lines to "cash in" before you can play, and then again to "cash out". All I can say is good luck and have fun. My Vegas luck is so good I thought about standing along the sidewalk and handing out those erotic flyers for TIPS!
Don't know about dollars, but I know the MGM Grand was still using half dollars....and paid out pretty well too
I can't speak for Vegas, but I was in Reno in January. I too was looking for any nickel comem's, especially keelboat. Didn't find not but a one, but I did find nickels in nice condidton dating back to 1956. I believe you can find some nice old coins, if you take the time to cull through some rolls. Not too many people looking here. Have a great time!
When I was last in Vegas I got Kennedy halves at the black jack tables when the payout was not an even dollar. Other than that everything was done with chips. Some of the slots paid out in quarters, but I think most just used the slip. I think the best way to leave Vegas with a lot of coins is to leave home with a lot of bills.
Well, sounds like my days of playing the 1-arm bandits is over--If I can't use real coins, screw them- Guess I'll stick with BJ, craps & poker-- IF I ever feel like throwing away money again at a casino..://..
I’ve only been to the Indian casino in Connecticut and they still use quarters and halves, and the nickel slots take nickels but pay out slips. The slips are deadly, since you are inclined to just keep playing your credit (until it is “0”) since you otherwise would have to find the machine or cashier to cash them in. I would guess that for quarters, for example, the casino is only good for state quarters if you collect them circulated, since silver quarters would probably not be accepted by the machines and would get weeded out pretty quickly. Maybe some old nickels turn up, but there again, they are probably all going to be Jeffersons, and while I do save the older ones, I am not sure if it is worth a trip to find even a handful of nickels worth barely over face value. Yes, the machines do take Buffalo nickels (I spent a couple dateless ones when I went), but how often will you see those? In any case, the casino I went to only gave you receipts back, so the only way to get nickels is to buy rolls there, and then you might as well just take them home to search them. BTW, I did get quite a few counterstamped coins (my creations) into the slots, so if you are looking for weird stuff like that, the casino in Conn, is a good place to go.
I just got back from Vegas three weeks ago and the casinos are going to the new ticket out payoffs more and more. There isn't even a slot to put coins in on some of the machines. The reason the casinos are doing this is to reduce overhead and employees. The machines don't run out of money or get jammed up with coins. They don't have to be refilled with coins. If you hit a jackpot on the new machines, you get a receipt that you take to a cashier and get your money. There are some casinos that have 50¢ machines but they are getting fewer all the time. The Riveria, Sahara and Excalibur have taken out their 50¢ machines within the last year. I don't know of any casino that has real dollar coins. They all use dollar tokens and have for years. Within a couple years, I expect about all the casinos will go coinless with their slot machines. You see more and more video slot machines with multi paylines where you can bet 40-45 credits on each spin. I don't like those machines but evidently people play them. It won't be long before the old three reel machines will be gone too. Have a good day, Gary
It's really sad. We are not big gamblers but we loved to play the slots. There was just something about that clunking of coin against metal. And how can you ever forget the sound of a big payout!! the casinos are sure going to be a lot more quiet now. I guess there's still the food and sightseeing.
vegas coin The last time I went to vegas I had heard about the tickets on the slots, so I took about $250 in quarters and halfs in a hand carry on bag. Well let me tell you that is heavy to tote around but the big problem I had was going through security at the airport. They xrayed that bag, picked it up and hauled it an me over to the back table, opened it up and wanted to know why I had so many loose coins to carry on the plane. Well my wife was behind me and let them know she was on there side as to what a dufas I was to haul a load of coin to vegas cause he wants to hear the coins plopping in the machine. Well don't take much to amuse me.Eh One more thing it takes a lot of cups to fill it all up, can't hall a bag of coins around in the casino's.

I go to Arizona every few months with my family. We usually go to casinos (except me only 14 dang) and my dad and me will purchase halve rolls and just about everything else as we are both coin collectors. Usually the cashiers will have rolls from the machines found a kennedy errors sold for 6$. Mostly just for fun though keep searching.
