Nice coins. Any Nero sestertius is a good thing. Recently, I got a dupondius, cheap. It is fairly crusty and took me a long, long time to attribute - the variations on these are extensive. If I got it wrong, please advise!

I thought it interesting that these have denomination mark ("II") on the reverse. This might indicate the denomination was somewhat unfamiliar to the citizenry at this point?

Nice coin @Gary R. Wilson! Sestertii of Nero are impressive. Here's mine, recently added. It has some flaws, but overall I am very happy with it.

Very nice Limes. Love the patina. I agree how impressive his coins are. Because of the artist in Nero, I feel like he took a personal interest in his coinage. He definitely went for style in his portrait and reverses.

There is something special about Nero's bronzes. These are two from my collection which I really like.

GENIO AVGVSTI / S - C Genius standing front, head to left, nude but for cloak, holding patera over altar with his right hand and cornucopiae in his left. BMC 370. Cohen 103. RIC 533.

    That's the interpretation I've heard before :).

Gary, I too like that reverse :). I love many of Nero's imperial coins and think his reign shows an emphasis on coin artistry.

    Some really wonderful coins here.
I have a couple of Nero coins that I'm proud of too. I lack a sestertius though. But I have many years left to get one :)

Sestertii of Nero certainly are among the most impressive products of Roman numismatic art.

I agree Tiff. Your coin is one of the best if not the best of this type I've ever seen. Just gorgeous.

I have been gradually making a small collection of Nero sestertii :

    upload_2020-3-5_8-36-37.png

Nero Æ Sestertius. Lugdunum, circa AD 65. NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P, laureate head right, globe at point of bust / DECVRSIO, Nero riding right, holding spear in right hand, soldier riding behind, holding vexillum over his right shoulder; S-C across fields. RIC 436; WCN 418; BMCRE 311; BN 71; C. 86. 27.00g, 37mm, 6h.

The decursio was a military exercise of mock combat or a display of equestrian skill made by horse-riders and charioteers at public games. Despite Nero’s provision of regular games, the presence of the vexillum on this type suggests a more military character to the scene. It has been suggested that the reverse refers to Nero’s institution of cavalry manoeuvres for the Praetorian Guard. An alternative interpretation is that there is a link to Nero’s fondness of racing horses, although Stevenson (DRC) disregards this. He explains that “the speed of the horses is not sufficiently rapid”.

    upload_2020-3-5_8-38-52.png

Nero Æ Sestertius. Lugdunum, AD 66. IMP NERO CAESAR AVG PONT MAX TR POT P P, laureate bust left; globe at point of bust / ANNONA AVGVSTI CERES, Annona standing right, holding cornucopiae with her left hand, resting right hand on her hip, facing Ceres seated left, holding grain ears with her extended right hand and torch with her left; modius on garlanded altar between them, ship's stern in background, SC in exergue. RIC 495; C. 22; BMCRE p. 260 note; Lyon 184; WCN 445. 27.45g, 36mm, 7h.
