I went to a flea market and it was this guy seeling coins so I decided to go over to check his prices out. He sold me 4 Standing Liberty Quarters for $5 dollars. I'll post a pic of one but they are almost all in this condition. What grade is this one and if I wanted to sell it as junk silver how much could I get for it?
If you paid $5 each it wasn't a good deal. If you paid $5 for all four you did GREAT! About $2 each as junk at a shop.
I got all of these for $5 dollars. I went back this morning and got 4 morgan dollars for $7 dollars. This guy seems really desperate for cash but i look at it this way if i don't buy the coins someone else will.
That's less than melt value for just one...much less four! Better go empty your Bank Account tomorrow and buy everything the guy has! Frank
You did beyond good. I'd buy silver slugs for that price and you're right if YOU don't buy them someone else will. Figure 8x face for "junk" silver. Buy it ALL at under that price.
I went back to the flea market yesterday and got alot of coins for $55 dollars. He told me that no one has been really buying any of his coins and that if I want any more to come back and he'll give me a good deal. This is what I got yesterday.... Morgan Dollars: 1881 x3 1885 x2 1890 x4 Half Dollars: 1965 1966 1967 1968-D x2 1969-D Dimes: 1935 x7 1936 1937 1939 1940-D 1941 x2 1942 x3 1943 x2 1943-D x2 1943-S 1944 x2 1944-S 1945 1961-D Quarters: 1935-D 1939-D 1940-D 1947-D 1952 1962-D Buffalo Nickles: 1936 x20 (with full dates)
I had 4 standing Liberty quarters my family left me. They were wore out, and had no legible dates. I did not want to sell them to the public because the date was gone, so I took them to a coin shop. Silver prices are in the gutter right now, but he gave me $3.10 per coin, and I paid him $4 per coin for replacement Liberty quarters with bold dates. This was 3 days ago, so it's pretty current info on value of that coin.
I am going to have to disagree with you that prices are "in the gutter", if you look at the historical price of silver, it is still WAY up from even just a few years ago: http://www.kitco.com/lfgif/ag3650lf_ma.gif So yes, it has come off it's peak by double-digit percentages, but it is also still up roughly 300% from 2003. ~Droid
One thing should always be remembered - there are a LOT of people who capitalize on just that way of thinking. Yeah, the deal would be great if the coins are genuine - but what if they are NOT genuine ? What if they are not silver ? Never forget guys - flea markets, swap meets and yard sales are the places where you most commonly find fakes - LOTS of them.
I was thinking wow, you did good! But, then I was wondering the same as GD, I worry they might not be silver (and the guy might not be aware of this either.) If they are silver, then you did pretty darn good man! :thumb: Phoenix
I truly hope this was the GREAT deal it appears, however I have the same feeling as some GD & Phoenix. Have you asked anyone if there real silver or did you jump in with both feet? Regards, Stan
Here's a few pics of some of the morgan dollars I got from him. I'll post more photos of the other coins later on today.
They look pretty good to me. Without actually holding them it will be hard to tell, but I'd say you got a great deal. Regards, Stan
Dano did you weigh the coins Morgans should weigh around 412 1/2 grains , also they look pretty good . rzage
Hard to tell from these pics, but one thing's for sure... there's a huge influx of forgeries from our friends in China. Remember, most of these fake Morgans have nether "copy" or "replica" stamped on them. Even if an eBay auction states the coins are stamped, almost always this is "forgotten". I did purchase some of these for research.... the dentils on the unc coins have a slightly rough look, similar to the pictures you posted. And the thing about flea markets and yard sales... most sellers disappear after a few appearances!
sorry about replying to this post a little late but my dsl was down for a little while. I took the morgan dollars to a coin shop near by and they weighed them for free for me. All of them weighed 26.73 grams except for one fake one that I got. All in all I think I got a very good deal.
