Not far from River Jordan or the Jordanian capital Amman (110 kms North), the city of Gadara is in Southern Syria close to the Jordanian borders. It was considered as one of the ten Biblical cities (Decapolis) that Jesus Christ advised his disciples to choose them as refuge in time of persecution. The city is currently known as " Um Kays". The following coin was struck at Gadara under Gordian III with reverse showing a galley sailing right and includes oarsmen and captain. Legend is in Greek to spell the name of the city. It weighs 11.5 g. Spijkerman 93. Please feel free to post your coins from Gadara or others from the Decapolis.
