protecting slabs

do the have any cases that you can put over your slabed coins so the slab doesn't get scratched?

This is just a slippery slope.

Pretty soon we'll be putting those in bags, and so on.
Won't it be ideal when we cant even see our coins!

I bought some of these boxes, The protective slips come with each box. You can still see the label and coin visible through plastic windows.

You beat me to it Vess, thats what I use for my " retirement " BU Red coins in the bank.....good stuff.

 

That's carrying things too far. The holder protects the coin. Then something protects the holder... then the holder of the holder... and on and on to ridiculousness. When I see a slab with a scratch, I'm just thankful that it is the slab and not the coin that absorbed the damage. But I don't consider the plastic part of the collection.

 

Yes, they are made of PVC. But again PVC can't do any harm to plastic slabs but not good for Baseball cards.

 

Mr. Sweeper, we're not done yet! You just can't stop there. Don't forget to get the Intercept Shield boxes that you then put the holdered holdered holdered coins in!

THEN you get some kind of air-tight enclosure and then some kind of ani-mosture device (preferably with a dial and spy ring).

Oh, and then should you store them in a big safe or safety-deposit box?

Well, I wouldn't write them off that fast. From what I've heard, the slabs are not air tight. So the IS covers can't hurt them. And, if I ran across two nice coins, exactly the same, graded the same, but one holder was scratched and the other wasn't......guess which one I would buy? I know you can get them re-holdered, but I'd let the seller do that.

 

When the RD to RB differance is hundreds or thousands of dollars in some cases, I'll let them giggle all they want at my IS holders.

I guess slab protectors are more important to sellers than to collectors.

of course if the slab is TRULY AIR TITE! but i think the jury may still be out on that, for certain.

 

Why do you think tpgs wont gaurentee copper coins over a certain time ? Also experiments have shown that no tpgs slabs will stop corrosion , they will slow it that's all , if you want the best protection for your coins IC products are the way to go ' if you feel you don't need thhat much protection , don't use them .

Ya know, I saw this slab cleaning solution that removes scuffs and scratches. I believe it's called "Slab-REnew". I've never tried it, but supposedly it works good.

 

I have heard the same thing about the product but never tried it. Auto parts stores sell a compound to shine yellowed plastic headlight lenses, much cheaper, and I use it now, it works on all except the deepest of scratches.

 

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Out of curiosity though, how did you figure that out?? Just experimenting with different cleaners?

 

I don't dispute that slabs aren't air-tight. But I never have bought into the idea that coins can be preserved in perfect condition forever. I don't even try. Everything is transient and it's a losing battle that is sure to end in disappointment should you choose to accept the challenge. Mabye that's why I'm more attracted to circulated coins to begin with.

After reading this thread I have to agree that slabbing coins is not for me. IMHO it is just the dealers way of trying to upsell. Nothing more. I mean exactly how many ways do we need to protect or collections? Sure i want my collection to look shiny, new, perfect. But at what cost? Sure coins appreciate, but if keeping the as close to the same as possible is going to cost more then the coins, it simply is not worth it.

Now I understand some collections are worth more then mine, ok so most are, lol. However to me if is it in a plastic holder, which is in a sleeve, which is in a holder sleeve which is in an album...sure you get the picture and i was to disply my collection, I'd be spending more time getting to the coin ( going thru the vault to get to the safe to....).

I keep it simple as far as safey and security goes. If whom ever gets my collection after I am worm food wants to deal with all those headaches, thats there choice. However Coins have been fouund on the ocean floor for what a hundred years or longer and still look decent, so I am not going to worry about what is going to happen with mine in the next 50 or 60 years.

Just my thoughts....
