I have a 1878 goloid metric pattern dollar. On the front of the coin it says e pluribus unum liberty 1878 On the reverse side it says United States of America goloid metric 1-g 16.1-s 1.9-c grams14.25 100 cents I think it has 38 stars on the back in a circle and the front a side head shot of miss liberty, I will try to post a picture, I found a picture of it on another web site but they will not let anyone copy and paste it. Thanks everyone!
Well assuming if you have a genuine, it's worth quite a fair bit. Chances are, it's a copy. Welcome to cointalk by the way.
1878 Goloid Hi guys...I came across this coin a while back but I never really looked into it's value. How can I tell if this coin is a fake? I have posted a pic of it. Thanks
Sorry but it looks like a counterfeit to me. The lettering is off, as well as the denticles. Here's a photo of a genuine 1878 goloid pattern. Bowers and Merena
I think the real ones are 1879 but I could be wrong. I'd keep a fake if I could get one just cause they don't say replica or copy on them. Unique find for sure. :thumb:
Oh well...It's still a nice coin. Thanks for your input. I do have other coins but I have too many to post. :headbang:
I agree with raider that it doesn't look right. But take the first step and measure the weight of it. It should be 14.25grams as it says on the coin. Doesn't mena it is real if it is, but sure means fake if it isn't. Jim
Check it with a magnet. I've got one just like yours and it will stick to a magnet through a telephone book.
A little research on the topic discloses that "Goloid" is a silver alloy with a small amount of gold and a somewhat larger amount of copper which the US Mint tested as a potential coinage metal in the 19th Century. (No mention in the Red Book that I can find.) It flunked the test because it could not be distinguished from the normal U.S. 90% silver coin alloy without chemical analysis, thus inviting counterfeiters to use silver-copper alloys alone to make lower-value copies - possibly including both of the ones pictured in this thread.
I found an 1878 Goloid Coin too Here are pictures of it, I tried comparing mine to the previous picture and to the picture of the original. The only difference i could see was how flat my coin's edges looked, however the overall look of the coin is flat. Real or fake?
I also have one that weights 17.3 grams, a 1888 says one dollar USOA and in god we trust on back, but weights 17.3 grams and Abraham Lincoln 1861-1865 in front and just has ""The UNSOA" and the white house on back same as a James Madison coin 1809-1817 as date all five weight 17.3 grams fakes HUH? What say you?
