Hello Frnds, I Recently bought an Proof-Set,which is Encased in an hard plastic box, which cannot be opened. I would like to open/break the box,so that i can touch my beauties! Please help me out,how can i open the box? which tool will be most appropriate that do not damage the coins in the process.
While I haven't handled a new zealand proof set brfore I think I can help you.I have expierence cracking open proofsets from here and the world On this proofset it looks like a flat head (I believe is the name) screwdriver will do the job.Just look at the seam where the two parts of the set meet and on there somewhere you should find a spot to fit the screwdriver in.When you get the screw driver in there turn it up the (screw driver anyway) and you will hear a crack. Then keep the driver in there and slide it in the crevice of the two sets untill you cant no more.No really don't force it.Then you screw the driver up and you will hear the crack again.Keep doing this untill you have gone completely around. Then take the top piece of plastci of carefully and ebjoy
Craign Proof sets are sealed so they can't opened too easy--They just arn't to be opend. You said you want to touch your beauties...Don't...they will have finger prints on them in no time and down will go the vaule of your set. You will more than likely lower the value of the set just by opening it. If you are dead set to open the set I think you'll need a flat head screwdriver and a knife.....MAKE SURE you hold the coins by the rim or edge--if you don't you will have finger prints show up on the coins. I will say it again because it can never be said too much...hold the coins by the edge if you MUST open the set...but otherwise leave the like it is... Hope this helps Speedy
Actually they are if you want to slab them On a not so serious note craige if you need a grading service may I recomend may NWIH (no way in heck) grading service.Everycoin is a MS70 with NWIH plus I am the leader in new slabbing oputunities.Just yesterday I slabbed a half eaten snickers as a HE70 (HE means half eaten!)
Midwestcoin13 I can't agree with you there...the mint doesn't make coins to be slabbed...but I see what you mean-- Also I hope that NWIH is "tongue in cheek"....! Speedy
Of course you realise that if you breath on it before you eat the snickers bar then it could be a MS70 LOL!! Otherwise the peanuts would drop it to a 65.
actually you mean HE65 and really we breathe on everyhting before we slab to make sure it is as shiny as posible. Why just yesterday we got an NGC MS66 1890 CC Morgan and we took a drimmel to it to "whiz it" Now it is all shiny. That is our goal at NWIH to whiz, dip, clean and touch plus breathe on your coin before it is slabbed to make sure it is all purdy.
Actually toning coins is an extra charge. However if indicated on the submissio forms for no fee we will put your coin in a rock tumbler! For the extra extra fee we will start a bonfire nd put your coin in it for 1 hour. Good things are happening at NWIH oh yeah!
Well, Thanks for all your support. Me gona keep the coins in Plastic holders(after opening).... Is it ok.. ? Should you all have any better alternatives..? And Speedy, Dont worry about finger-prints! Coz i definately aware hot to hold ! Also... i seen this Proof-Set in an shop-window, in which an single coin has gone Bleemed... ! Yes.. it was sealed pack & the coin inside has gone bleemed... Any-idea how it can happen ? inspite its been sealed....?
With all due respect, it is crazy to open a sealed set just so you can touch the coins. First, opening the set will decrease the value if you ever re-sell, and second, there is the risk that handling them will damage them. If you want to handle coins, buy some nice circulated examples.
JBK, 1] I would never sell this set coz this is an Commemorative set. 2] I know i can take enough Care(after opening) of the coins. 3] The Plastc case has Scrathes & turned a bit milky. So here the three reasons i wana Open dem !!!!
Sounds good. In that case, I say be VERY careful. I opened a US set and the plastic broke apart sending pieces flying all over. Luckily the coins were OK.
