Is this over polished dies, acid dipped, road rash or just a bad planchet to begin with? 1978fullobv.jpg 1978fullrev.jpg

    Extremely worn die strike.
With a bit of circulation wear.

Looks like someone used a rotary wire brush on it. Fred beat me to it. "Hi Fred"

Do I hear a "ground down, AND worn, AND acid-dipped"?

Looks like the ones I used to use a Brillo pad on as all the scratches also go over the rim, in multiple directions.

Looks like a that coin cleaning acid garbage on ebay. You know, the stuff that completely etches the surface, AND you have to use steel wool or a steel wire brush in order for it to work effectively? God, I HATE that stuff.

The stuff that once you read the directions that tell you in the fine print, to wear a respirator and wear rubber gloves and you have done neither..........

Don't worry, I've used nic-a-date a thousand time, and haven't ended up in the hospital yet! Still waiting for that fateful day when I need a CAT scan for one thing, then it turns I have brain cancer though... (BTW, I do use gloves, but not a respirator).

I'm with @Fred Weinberg and vote for wire brush in a misguided attempt of cleaning the coin.
