Hi guys. I am wanting opinions on this coin. It seems to match the diagnostics for a Die 2 1922 plain. Do you agree? Also, I realize the gouge up front reduces the value considerably. I have a hard time grading these, as they seem to be graded very generously compared to other Lincolns. What would the detail grade for this one be? thanks, John
I see nothing that tells me it is not die #2, but I cannot make out enough detail to confirm that it is die #2. Ignoring the gash, the coin grades VG10 or maybe F12 if all the wheat lines are there. I do not believe that to be true. The reason they appear that way is that they are graded by the wear not just the lack or presents of details. All of the 1922's (no "D"'s and weak "D"'s) are struck with very worn dies. They appear to be worn due to the lack of detail. In the case of die #2, grade is determined almost exclusively on the reverse.
Hi Johnny, That sure looks a lot like the 22 Plain I posted sometime ago. If it proves to be authentic it could be 'worth a pretty penny'. Do you have a trustworthy coin dealer you can show it to? If not, you could give cointalkers your general location someone might be able to guide you to a good dealer. jeankay
