On the obverse is a crack from rim left through date to chin and around head and is a little sunken. Any ideas?
What is the damaged? That's the easy way out. Why is it damage? The way it looks or what? Is it because the coin is circulated? This why i sometimes question what you guys say. Tell the person why it could not be a mint error. If you don't know why comment so definitively. You are dealing with a lot of newbies who are really trying to learn. Thanks
I realize that it takes a bit of common sense to understand this, but when is a die crack "sunken"? ~ Chris
Sorry, wrong wording. The crack is raised from the rim through date to neck. Around the edge of head is incused. It looks like the planchet is sunken around head.
It seems to me that if you understood the minting process you would know why it isn't a mint error. And it is one ugly coin.
another vague response. What do you know about mint errors, In reference to this coin? Informed response please.
Let's put it this way: I know about mint errors because I understand the minting process. Since you are thinking it is a mint error, apparently you don't know the process and have to ask others. It's not that much of a problem to go, for example, on YouTube and watch a video about it. Once you do that, or even just read about it, in reference to your coin, you will see what we see and also learn a great deal.
Anyone who has read many of your 555 posts would understand that you don't have the slightest idea about what you think you know. If this is too vague for you to comprehend, then just go back to your thread about the crustacean. ~ Chris
If it were a cracked die it would also affect the numbers in the date, not just the field. If the anomaly were truly above the field then it maybe a scratch on the die. But I suspect it's "zink rot" coming up through the copper.
Thanks everyone. The last 2 comments sounds like valid possibilities. That's how you respond. Thanks guys!
