2000 P Virginia state quarter.

    I have seen a few coins in this condition. To the naked eye, it looks dark gray, but is brown in camera pic. What causes this condition?

    Environmental Exposure Damage.

    Exposure to the elements.. Soil, dirt, sand, water or harsh chemicals can affect the Cupro-Nickel layer which does contain copper.

    Even nickels can be affected by Environmental Toning.
