My girl friend wants me to score a proof set for the year our son was born.2002,10 piece, silver, proof set.Called the mint, sold out.checked E-bay and found some.A couple were close to ending and maybe a couple of bids to 10 bucks.Others were posted for acouple of days with 12 to 15 bids and up to 40 to a hunderd bucks.Checked a couple of private sites and one wanted $345. Went to a coin shop, dont have it cant get it.Another coin shop dont have it,but can get it,sure no problem.8o bucks. Is there something about this set that im not aware of,or am I missing something or is the market lost and out of control. What gives? Thanks for your helpful words...Regards,Mike
Not out of control. just doing what we want all of our coins to do...appreciate in value. I think the $345 is high. The $80 is fair since CoinValues shows the set at $85 for a high. Haven't followed the market on this so I don't know what they have been selling for. Check the completed auctions for them on ebay to see what the average price has been. Not sure what the Greysheet bid is on this one.
Just be glad your son wasn't born in 1999, or 2001 for that matter. 1999 silver proof sets routinely go for $250+ and 2001's are now $100+ I browsed through ebay a bit and found the 2002 silver set to be going between $65 - $80, so your local dealer isn't that far off. Personally, I'd go for the coins from your dealer, that way you can view the coins first before paying, unlike ebay which is the opposite. Don't get me wrong, I've done well with ebay, but there is always a risk you'll get junk coins (damaged/poor condition) or get none at all. With a dealer, if the coins are junk, you can always walk away, $$'s still in your pocket. Hope this helps.
I had two 1999 proof sets. I also have a Grand Daughter who was born in 1999. So, now I only have one 1999 proof set.
Whoops! I meant to state "Grandson" in the earlier post. Same difference though. I'm down to one 1999 proof set.
Hey Gapcracker... think the 2002 set is hard to find.. try getting the individual AGE proof versions in any denomination...for whats its worth..I wonder if the Sept 11, attacks had anything to do with the availibility of the AGE's. Just a thought..anyone have any other ideas? Peace..
