Hi everyone. Found this little coin on auction. Need it to complete my set of draped bust. I just want to know if you guys believe it is authentic. What do you think the value is? These are the only pictures I was given. Thanks Larry
5 o'clock hit (reverse) would concern me. Well worn and obviously cleaned. If the price were in my wheelhouse I'd go for it. [edit] Concerning what they want for this coin, it would never reside in my wheelhouse.
Even with the dent, I think it is a market acceptable coin, but it could well end up in a Details holder.
cleaned yes damaged yes as other have suggested. Great coin and looks like the real deal to me. Better than many on the market.
It looks genuine to me. The 15 star obverse variety is never well struck, especially the detail of the eagle's feathers on the reverse. Here is a certified piece in an NGC AU-53 "fatty holder." Ignoring the minor damage, I would say that your coin has VF-20 sharpness.
This one is one of the two 16 star varieties. This one came back from NGC in a VF-20 holder. My grade was that is the best Fine-15 on the planet. These coins are very often damaged. This one is problem free aside for the wear.
Thanks guys. I decided to purchase it because I thought it was a nice example for the price. Seems to be priced well at $1250. The damage and cleaning probably bring it’s f12 value to an ag3-4 value with high quality details. not much more I can ask for.
It also sold on the 14th of the month for $1495 obo. You can see it under completed listings for "1797 half dime."
I think that’s a fair price for the coin which still has a lot of detail and meat on it. A perfect example for a raw type set
I hope you’re right. Seems too good to be true. Than again it’s only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. With the damage on it im sure that it’s value has taken a serious toll from F15 details.
Again I hope you’re right. It could very well be vf details. But I purchased it at an ag3 price. I’m suspicious.
