Found this in pocket change. Something terrible happened to this poor Dime. About 2/3 the regular thickness, so something definatly mashed it, but it is almost perfectly round. Roosevelt is still slightly raised. I have been trying, for who knows why, to visualize what process could have created this mutant. Any ideas?

its possible it could be a weak strike because the blank was to thin. Is the surface pretty ruined?

Maybe an acid dip or something.

The surface is very smooth with no visable pitting, rules out sandpaper. I'm think some type of press which would slowly apply force. Can't be acid, it still has reeding on the edge. Too even to be a hammer wack.

Looks like a poorly placed railroad dime.

Torch job. It started to melt.

No melting the coin is shiny, clean, and smooth. The photo looks a little dark due to poor photography, the coin is as bright as the comparision dime. The train theory was the first thing i thought of. I ruled it out since the coin is not tapered or elongated. I guess it could be if the train was going real slow and the dime was pulled after only one wheel rolled over it.
