I am trying to learn how to bid on ebay and I need to know if my hunch is correct. Has this coin been clean/whizzed? The lines on the obverse say it has. Am I correct? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250284888591
I love it when they say they are not a coin expert but then put things like "key date" in the listing. I'm supprised they didn't put a link to the PCGS price guide on the page. Well at least the pic doesn't hide anything.
Not sure about the Whizzed part. But but abusively cleaned gets a high score. Very good choice on your part to not bid. Buyer should be sent condolences.
Ebay is dangerous. You're lucky the seller was so unwise as to put a decent photo in the auction so that the cleaning was so clearly visible.
Yeah, if they positioned the light differently you'd not see those beaucoup hairlines. Then you buy the thing, pay the shipping, cuss, buy the packing, stand in line at the post office, pay the return postage/ins/deliv confl., and VOW to stop looking for bargains on fleabay! (personal experience).
cleaned with an abrasive. Good for a jewelry piece. Whizzed coins hairlines usually are not detectible from a photo. A friend submitted what both of us thought was a choice unc morgan to PCGS and it came back whizzed, but we both couldnt see it. I would do a search on this site for cleaned coins. Also, dipped coins will show hairlines, light hairlines will can still be slabbed, but usually get marked down a grade or two. Watch out for this in MS60 to 62 slabbed coins, even from the top TPGs.
