My research indicates that a cob is the part of an ear of corn that you throw away when you are done eating the kernals. :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist :D (Especially since I have no idea what you actually do mean).

A cob is the name given to crudely struck coins from the Spanish colonial mints.

In this case I'm sure Doug is correct as to what a "cob" is or is not. But around here we keep a bucket full of "cobs" sitting just inside of the door of the out-house.

Hey Dan - Sears is being acquired by KMart, so you'd better stock up on catalogs for the three-holer.[IMG]

Uhhhh Roy - you gotta that kinda the other way around. Sears is taking over K-Mart - not K-Mart Sears.

    how to spot fakes

Well - as with any other coin - the only way to spot fakes is to be familiar enough with the genuine items to recognize a fake when you see one. There are literally so many different things you have to be aware of that you cannot list them in anything short of a book.

In the meantime - if you have a coin you'd like to ask about, feel free to ask ;)
