Early next month my wife and I, and some family members will fly to Puerto Vallarta for a week-long vacation. Primary goals, of course, are rest and relaxation, sight-seeing and photography. However, the opportunity to collect Mexican coins is something I want to take advantage of. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any coin stores in Puerto Vallarta? When it comes to collecting a variety of Mexican coins and banknotes, should I go to banks? Or, exchange money in stores and shops, or perhaps do some trading with waiters in restaurants, which is something we did in Cozumel. Also, can anybody advise which coins to look for? Are there some nice coins in higher denominations? Obviously, I know very little about Mexican coinage, but would like to take advantage of adding coins to my collection during the vacation. Any help would be appreciated.
Gary - If I wanted to be on the safe side I would settle for coins & notes found in circulation. From what I have seen and read there seem to be more fake Mexican coins in Mexico than there is anyplace else. They try to sell them to unsuspecting tourists & collectors.
I dont have much to say but I would recomend trading with waiters and such.Plus one note whatever you do pass on the 1785 Morgans
Gary As for coins GD has probly given the best advice, but here is another little piece of advice, do not flash any amounts of money in the tourist areas of town, its not a safe thing to do,,it is best to break your funds into small amounts and spread them around in you pockets a few bucks here a few bucks there, Just be careful. 1. Beware.... one tequila two tequila three tequila floor (couldn't help it) 2. Much of the "silver" jewelry down there is simply plated copper. 3. Only other thought is, if I recall correctly, that region of Mexico is brutal on cars b/c of all the salt water related humidity. They rust out much faster there. After the challenge of finding genuine coins, I'd say the next challenge would be finding ones that haven't been damaged just by the elements. Have a fun safe trip!
