In this case I'm sure Doug is correct as to what a "cob" is or is not. But around here we keep a bucket full of "cobs" sitting just inside of the door of the out-house.

Well - as with any other coin - the only way to spot fakes is to be familiar enough with the genuine items to recognize a fake when you see one. There are literally so many different things you have to be aware of that you cannot list them in anything short of a book.
