Many coins given to me, do I have anything?

Well, back in the 60's my Grandpa use to collect coins and later gave them to my father. Recently my father has given me the coin set and asked me to find out how much some of the coins are worth or if there is anything rare in there. Since I am new to the world of coin collecting I am unsure what any of this is worth and googling doesn't help too much. Private investors and coin shops are really no help at all.

Below are pictures of the whole set. I tried to take the pictures large so you can view each coin, but if you are curious about a coin or want a larger view of it please let me know so I can take another picture.

I appreciate all the posts here since it helps a lot!

Seeing as I will be taking the pictures in sets of 4 now I will keep updating this post, thanks.

Like I said above if you need a better picture of a coin let me know. I understand not all of them can be seen since I tried fitting them all into one picture, but a lot of the coins names and dates (that my Grandpa believed they were) are written on the coin. Ignore the price on them since that was an appraisal back in the 60's.

Maybe it would be better if you took larger pictures of say four coins at a time , that could help .

Okay. I updated my post with 4 coins at a time. I will keep updating my post later on with more pictures. Since there is so many it might take awhile.

You might have better luck posting this over in World Coins. Also, for anyone to give you an accurate assessment of your coins they will need better photos of each coin so the condition can be determined.

Some of the "coins" appear to be medals (see the Indian pieces along the left side of Photo #5). These generally have very little collector value.

Yeah I know there are some medals and tokens, but mainly coins in this collection. I will try world coins I guess since it seems like a better fit, but some of these coins are Canadian and US so I guess I will have to pick through those. I was mainly just trying to see if any of them were 'special/rare' so then I would take a picture of their current condition. I guess I will stop posting images after this post since this isn't the correct section.

So, since I have a lot of Canadian and some U.S. should I make a new thread with those here and the other coins in the world section? I still have so much pictures to upload.

Hi Ryan. Listen, first order of business: S_l_o_w d_o_w_n. I just loaded every one of your photos and looked at them and somebody (namely, your grandpa) took some serious time, here. You're doing good, IMO, because you're treating that with respect. I like that. Someday, you see, I'm going to leave my coins to somebody I care about, too. So, let me see if I can't take you through this...how I'd proceed.

First step is to identify these coins. Here's a starting point for that, some pictures...this is a Canadian coin club: http://www.pcfleet.com/Coinclub/Canada/Can_coins-en.htm. I found this just searching Canadian coins in Google. Next step is, search around for a price guide. Here's a Canadian coin dealer, and what they're offering: http://www.calgarycoin.com/index.html. Ultimately, you'll need a good starter book and price guide. For U.S. coins, the book we all started with is the Red Book. Just research that in Google, and you'll find it. I don't know what book you'll need for your Canadian coins, but there are a lot of folks, here, who do, and, I'm sure, will offer you help you on that. Third step is to grade your coins. A grade is just a condition of your coin. What would you rather have, something brand new, or a hand-me-down? It's the same logic, here. The better the condition, the more it's worth. The scarcer the date and mintmark, the more it's worth. We'll help you with that, the grading, once you find something you think may be interesting, and post us some good quality pics of both the heads and tails sides. Post it in World Coins, as suggested.

Listen, very nice collection. You're already way ahead in the game. Good luck! :)

Ryan , Eddiespin gave you some excellant advice , heed it and enjoy your grandpas coins that's what he wants you to do , then learn about them , ask all the questions you can , sometimes it only takes a few hours for the answer sometimes a few days , enjoy the beaty and history you have there .

Hey welcome to the forum, You got a nice lot of coins. If you are interested in the best book for Canadian coins that would be "A Charlton Standard Catalogue- Canadian Coins".

Thanks. Thanks everyone for the help. I do want to learn the history or some of these coins I do admit. I think the latest one I has is 1751 Wellington Penny. It just amazes me how old it is. But I am not sure if I was planning on keeping them. My Grandpa passed away quite some time ago and gave them to my dad since there was no one else to give them to. My dad told me to see how much they are worth and the history on them instead of taking them to a dealer. Thanks everyone.

Third Link bottom left hand side, The Upper Canada half token is worth roughly in the $10-20 range. There are two varities for that token because some were made by the Royal Mint in medal alignment which is the type of alignment Canadian coins use today. The other variety is done by the Heaton Mint which is coin alignment which is the way U.S coins are aligned.
(Prices listed in Canadian funds I think the exchange is about $1 USD = $1.05 CAD)

Also for the 1947 Canadian 5 cent could you tell us if by the date if there is a maple leaf, dot or nothing at all. There is three varieties for that year.

Welcome Ryan M. The only thing that I can add to what the others have said is, Don't try and clean your coins. Value can be quickly and easily destroyed by someone with no experience. Lots of people with experience have ruined coins by cleaning. Hope you decide to pick up where your grandpa left off.

    It has a maple leaf.

But yeah my grandpa had more world coins that U.S., sort of interesting. He use to have a car lot and he would take coins off people for cars that would be classics today. But he was a good guy with a kind heart.

TheNoost, I know I know nothing about coins, but I already know you shouldn't clean the coins. :p

Also, I feel as I am overwhelmed with trying to find the information and pricing on some of these coins. I will probably just pick a few coins out and start from there. I heard some other people, not from here, that said there is some nice Canadian pieces so I might start with that.
