http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-D-Lincoln-...39:1|66:2|65:13|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Is it just me or does something just not look copacetic with this 1914-D Lincoln cent that sold recently on ebay?
The D looks wrong. It's tilted, and even though it is hard to tell from the photo, it does not have that characteristic shape for a 1914. I would have passed.
I'm wondering if this could have been a 1911-D that somebody altered. Does anyone else think the "4" could be an altered "1"?
there were 6 obv. dies used, with the D mm individually punched into each one. Thus there is room for variation in the MM position. I don't see anything about it that screams "fake!." Personally, unless you can examine it carefully in hand and also look for the obv. die line found on many specimens, I wouldn't buy one outside of a reliable tpg holder.
Just A Guess Correct me if I'm wrong. A genuine 1914D has no VDB on the shoulder. Red Book warns of altered dates.
That is correct. However, I see no signs of a VDB on this coin. I'm not a Lincoln expert...but nothing is jumping out as obviously bad to me.
I would have stayed away from it. If genuine, it sold at a fair price. It does not look either obviously real or fake to me, but does show some indicators of being genuine. The triangular mintmark and the die crack connecting the bust to the rim. It is just too difficult on these " maybe" coins to go by pics, and I have gotten into trouble in the past trying.
I see it as a VG, and as such the price is very fair. CDN Bid, and for an eBay auction, that's quite good. Price probably kept down by the question of authenticity.
Compared to another the 4 does look odd. http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m376/impavg/a949_1-crop-vert.jpg
Not a very good picture to pay that much money for. The good part; you can get a refund. The buyer has made some great purchases in the last two months.
