"Unsearched" penny rolls

On a lark, I bought several rolls of Lincoln cents that were advertised to have been "Unsearched by Me [the seller]". They came in the old style rolled-end rolls that didn't appear to have been opened and re-rolled so they may have actually been original bank rolls. In each roll, I found what was a fairly even mix of wheat years from the 10's through 1958, with one or two AU-55 Reds and/or IHCs thrown in. There were few surprises; the nicest surprise was a RB 1909 AU-55. There were a few F and EF grade coins that I used to upgrade my from-circulation Cent collection (which is now missing only the S-VDB).

    Total out of six rolls:

Ah man. I've bought so many "unsearched" rolls in hopes of being one of the lucky ones who get a key-date..i.e. the 1909S VDB. Most never have anything spectacular, and I usually end up re-rolling them for my 'hoard' I'm starting. I now have $10.50 in face value of wheats and I.H.'s.
The last two rolls I got though actually had a total of 18 Indian Heads, which was quite the surprise.

Still though, I'm just waiting for that one roll that contains a key date. Maybe patience will pay off someday.

Some decent finds though. 11 1919? That's so odd, that seems to be the one year in the teens I find the most of. My last few rolls all had 4-5 1919's in them. How strange

I occasionally buy supposedly unsearched rolls of cents. I'm never really holding out much hope that most are actually unsearched. What are the odds a roll that is nearing 75-80 years old has remained unsearched by anyone? Although I've never found a key date, it seems quite a few have failed to search (if indeed they have been searched) for varieties, as I find quite a few. I don't collect varieties, but they come in handy as trade material at my local coin shop.

David, did you get them off Ebay or from a local advertisement?"
I've only bought a few individual IH and they were overpriced and worn out!

    Hi davidh,

Great finds... you nearly got a complete collection there! I have gone through a lot of loose wheats and haven't found many more early dates than you have in those rolls.
    Congratulations!

    David,

Great finds. Just as an FYI, the distribution of coins in your rolls suggests the rolls were loaded with early dates and probably searched. Most people don't care as long as they find keys/semi-keys.

Did you find the later dates (40s and 50s) in the same rolls, or did you find the later dates mixed with the early ones?

These were ebay purchases. As I said in my original post, "In each roll, I found what was a fairly even mix of wheat years from the 10's through 1958, with one or two AU-55 Reds and/or IHCs thrown in."

I have little doubt that the rolls were created. Since there were no Memorial cents at all, the implication is that they were rolled in 1958 or shortly after. If that was the true case, there would have been a far larger percentage of late Wheat cents in AU.

The actual mix was even on the 10's, 20's and 40's; less so on the 30's and more so on the 50's. The R's and RB's included one each 09, 37-S, 43 and 43-D, 44 and 47-D in addition to 10 in the 50's.

    The 10-S VG-F, 22-D F, 33-D F+ and 08-S F IHC were pleasant surprises.

All of the IHC's were F-EF.

side note - are the bright shiny 43, 43-D and 43-S cents referred to as Red or Red-Brown? Or are they White or White-Grey?
