@johnmilton that is a cool example and worthy of discussion. In general, we try to only post one coin at a time to keep it clean and simple. Please let me know if anyone has a coin, and you will be placed in line to post. There are already comments on your coin, so we'll have two in the works this round.

@Randy Abercrombie and @Jayyk38 are still up next.

My opinion is NO CAC on the gold coin. Gold in general is harder for me, but I just see too many marks (and hairlines like physics mentioned) to consider it up there for a 58.

It's like @johnmilton mentioned-starting a new TPG isn't too viable (see David Lawrence's attempt with DGS...respected company but no real market for a new TPG). JA found something that worked (stickering A and B coins) and that idea had backing behind it (including financial). With grade inflation and inconsistencies in grading, there was a demand for fourth party grading.

Doesn't surprise me that '35 Bust 1/2 CAC'd as it had beautiful color! Just thought that gunk would've held it back

Like most things connected with CAC for me, it usually ends up with an unpleasant conclusion. I will not post to this thread again.

CAC has ruined the U.S. coin market for me. When you have to get permission from one man to add a coin to your collection, I realized that it was time for me to stop buying more expensive U.S. coins.

To finish the issue, that 1838-P half eagle as a CAC sticker. Most people I know don't like the piece for the grade. I bought the coin out of frustration at a major show that turned out to be a almost total bust.

We welcome all opinions on this thread and don’t want you to leave it. I agree with many of the points you bring up and can say that the sentiment on here is far from what you’d see on the PCGS boards (aside from a few members).

The rule of one coin at a time is something we have used for all similar threads (toning, details coins, stars, etc...). It just keeps things organized.

I hope you do, I enjoy seeing your coins and learn alot.

I realize for vets like you and Big Time Collectors that the entire CAC thing can get a bit ridiculous (don't get me started on LS and her infatuation with stickers). But I don't think that NOT having a CAC diminishes what anybody (yourself included) has.

I have a few CAC coins but also most of mine are non-CAC. Like folks say, enjoy the coin, not the slab or the grade or the sticker. :D

Can you elaborate on "buying the coin out of frustration" ? Sounds like it might be an interesting story.

I say yes (Edited: I should have been more specific...green bean) to the Oregon 1/2 dollar and a no on the 1838 half eagle. Both of these coins are very nice, and I would consider myself lucky to own them. Also, can I get in the queue as well?

It is a very nice coin, and I am not surprised to see a gold bean on it.

Holy cow on all the subsequent chatter between my picture post and this one. It's time I post my results for all to see.

Gold bean..... Nice! And quite deserving as well. These are like buffalo nickels to me. Hard for me to read a solid grade without a field behind the devices.

I'll go ahead and plug in my humble addition to the thread. I'll be away most of the evening and don't want to slow things down..... I am a cell phone photo guy and tried carefully to get these shots as clear as possible. It is in a PCGS holder and graded MS63 and is the first coin I ever sent in to CAC. Did I get a bean?

It was the Winter ANA show that was held in Orlando. I went there thinking that it could not be as good as a Winter FUN, but maybe comparable to a Baltimore.

I went with the 1839-C Quarter Eagle as the top coin on my list. There were six of them on the floor, with slab grades ranging from AU-50 to MS-62. They were all in NGC holders. Everyone of them had been cleaned, and they were as bright as a piece of brass that had been worked over with “Brasso.” I could see that a couple of them had been decent coins before some idiot ruined them.

The fact that they were ruined had no effect on the asking prices. They were priced as if the coins had no problems at all. They ranged up to $22,000 for the “MS-62.” I would not have purchased any of them unless they had been priced at melt. (Well that’s an exaggeration, but the price would have had to been low enough for me to sell the coin on the floor to another dealer because I would not have wanted to come home with any of those coins.)

I had gone there hoping to fill at least one hole in my Classic Head $2.50 and $5.00 sets. This 1838-P $5 was only coin I could find that had original surfaces that was still on my list. The dealer started off with a CAC related price, but came down when I give him a counteroffer which he accepted. I figured the coin graded AU-55.

That will be my first and last Winter ANA show up unless it’s within an hour so driving distance. It was not worth the meal and hotel bills. I had heard from other collectors that the Winter ANA was often a misfire, and this proved it.

Winner winner chicken dinner! Seriously, I thought that the Oregon commemorative was undergraded and still do. As for the 1908 St Gaudens I think it is deserving of a bean (most likely green). When it comes to gold, I don't have much experience these coins.

Randy I think your Saint has a green been! Very nice 63! I know they're hard on the Saints and are stingy with those beenies!

I'll say bean on the 08 Saint. The toned spots on the obverse indicate original surfaces, and CAC rewards those. It looks like a solid 63, gradewise.

I'm split on the Saint. Since I like what I see overall, I'm pushing this towards a YES on a Green CAC.

Note: I'll update the summary after the reveal of the Saint.
@Randy Abercrombie I tend to give these at least 24 hours, but if you want to reveal earlier (or a bit later), that is fine with me.

To keep things moving along.... Here is the reveal. Yes, I did get a green bean on my first CAC submittal.
