I have a few error pennys in my collection. Some are clips, laminations, clogs, and missing or very weak letters. Two of the more unusual are a 1985-D silver colored penny and a blank planchet. I beleive the 1985 missed the copper coating but have read that some were manufactored by some type of acid treatment. Any thoughts. Has anyone else come across any of these?
Weight difference won't be significant. From the picture I'd say it is either plated or a genuine non-plated cent. I don't think it is a unplated alteration. They are normally dark in color or have rough surfaces. From the picture the surfaces look smooth. Unfortunately coins such as that really need to be examined in hand by a specialist since there are so many alterations out there. The planchet is not that uncommon and worth a very modest amount.
