To CAC or not to CAC - official game thread

Interesting coin...but I'm not experienced with the design to make a firm commitment. I agree that there are a few distracting anomalies with the coin, but on a circulated specimen, certainly not unheard of. On the obverse alone, I think it makes the grade and gets a green CAC. But factoring in the reverse, I think the grade made was a squeaker and not worthy of the CAC label. I'm here to learn though, so we will see.

Alright, time for the reveal. CAC gave this a bean - but I absolutely disagree. In terms of wear alone, the coin is a superb AU-50, probably more like 53.

However, the coin has problems. The reverse has a big glob of material stuck on it at 7 o'clock. Even more problematic, all of the brown stuff on the reverse is actually dirt or something. It is thick, and encrusts much of the reverse. No way should that get a CAC! I'm ok with a little bit of dirt, but this is extreme.

I had a feeling that one had a CAC (even though I disagreed with it). It’s definitely a good example and one that makes you wonder what they saw to sticker it?

This one is part of a date set that I bought a few years ago. NGC '65. Did she 'green' or did she 'gold' or did she 'bean' at all?

 

I believe MS65 is the correct grade and I say she got a green sticker.

 

Interesting idea for a thread. My two cents is: I use PCGS, NGC or ANACS' grade opinion to tell me what they see regarding the wear and/or hits to the coin (they allow for cleaning up to MS65). Then if a coin has CAC approval, it tells me more about the originality of the surfaces in addition to a confirmation of the TPGer's opinion. I then use my own eyes for confirmation and for making an opinion on the eye appeal of the coin. There are a lot of things that CAC let's slide that I don't like such as fingerprints. Didn't mean to rain on the parade for those having fun with this thread, but I don't feel that I can give an opinion based on a couple photos.

 

Nice coin and wouldn't be surprised if it got a bean. The question is whether it got a green or gold bean. To me it could grade a solid MS66 so I'd have to lean towards a gold bean.

 

I think the 1939 Oregon Trail got the green bean.

It looks like an “A” coin for the 65 grade (I see no major hits or anything distracting).

I would say the the Oregon Trail got a green sticker. A couple of marks keep it out of the gold category.

Yes it would, but I have a simple question about...Why doesn't CAC just assign a grade without the involvement of another grading service?

 

The founder knew that a new grading service would not be economically viable, even with him running it. Others, like ICG and ANACS tried and actually made a good faith effort before they had to say that breaking the hold that PCGS and to lesser extent NGC have on the U.S. coin grading market is unbreakable.

The CAC founder was able to leverage his reputation into a viable grading service. At the same time he was able to set up a situation where he and his dealer compatriots could buy coins sight-unseen with great confidence.

Yes to the bean on the Oregon Trail. Absolutely fantastic coin, and solid for a 66. I don't think it got the gold, but it absolutely deserves a bean.

No to the bean on the Classic Head half eagle that jumped the line. Those hairlines worry me - I wouldn't expect that many hairlines on a 58, although the wear looks right for the grade.

 

I been on the fence on the half eagle. After reading @physics-fan3.14 reply I believe he zeroed in on what I was searching for. I get romantic over early gold and I want to see it have the sticker and have vacillated twice now with my answer...... I am going to say yes. I do believe it is a solid 58 and deserves the bean.

No bean on the 1838 $5. While it's a nice coin that I'd want, it looks a little too tired for a 58.
