I had a question about the 2001 S Sacagawea proof dollar. Does anyone know why this coin is rare and has such a high value compared to the rest of the Sacagawea dollars? Since this coin came out of a 2001 S proof set wouldn't that make it just as rare as any other 2001 S coin? Yet the rest of the 2001 S proofs are not worth near this one. Can anyone explain this? Thanks
Question comes up fairly regularly. Answer is still the same, no good reason. Yes it has the lowest mintage but only by a tiny amount an the second rarest has no real premium. If another date such as the 2008 were discovered to have a very slightly lower mintage you would see the 2008 -S Sac jump in price and the 2001 S Sac plummet.
