I found that the penny sealed in my 1993 San Francisco proof set is damaged. It has this dent in the open area on the left. Here’s a picture of it. Sorry about it being so big. http://k.1asphost.com/qazwsxedc647/Picture.jpg so considering that its sealed in a proof set would that mean this happened at the mint?
Well..I'm no expert but I would call that damaged--it is easy for somrhing like that to happen at the mint...that is what I think. Speedy
I would think it is a mint error since it is a proof and had to go thru QA process. Not an error expert but it is interesting.
IMO if it happened at the mint, it is a mint error, isn't that what an error is, damage or otherwise?
A error occurs during the strike - damage occurs after the strike whether it happens at the mint or not.
I guess the picture does make it look different but it a dent. Any way then is it common for damaged coins to be found in proof sets?
They shouldn't be, they are supposed to be the finest of the finest. They are supposed to be flawless, they are stuck multiple times and the dies are specialy polished.
