The first bay on left obviously has a huge chip, my question is about the 5th bay from the left, there is a piece of something molded, embedded into the pillar, so, is it possible the 1st and 5th bay are connected? something happened in the process are the 2 bays connected in the mishap? I cannot get a good picture of the embedded peice, it is bright gold in color
That my friend is what we call a Hornet's Nest Die Break.. I own a few and some other members have found them also. It is not embedded but raised metal from the Planchet that flowed into the break on the Die that struck it!
Here is one of my old threads on it https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1c-2007-die-break-inside-the-bays-my-third-hornets-nest.332925/
Awesome, I will check it out!!! Thanks. The snow is melting here, soon I will be finding lost treasures metal detecting ; )
It's a normal blank planchet. When the Die that strikes it becomes overused we call it a worn die. That area broke away on the die so when it struck the blank planchet the metal flowed into the break. No added metal at anytime! Simple.
I understand the die break, it's the 5th bay slowing me down, I'll review your messages, something is in there lol
Thanks, I'd like the see Penny's made, I work in manufacturing, I understand how when one thing malfunctions it affects the other processes
That's a nice hornets nest Die break. The other is nice but too small for me to tell. Definitely something going on.
@Marie909 I can't tell from these photos, but perhaps what you might be seeing in the bays is a die clash. If that is the case then any number of bays may be affected but usually bays 3-9. That's because that is where most of the obverse design would transfer to the reverse during a clash event. An overlay could tell you more about what you may be seeing. Perhaps someone here could post one for you for comparison. Nice die chip by the way.
