Some ask how long you been collecting, Others may say something like, wow... How much did you pay for that. Well I am taking the liberty of showing a BHD that has been in the old collection for a while. Purchased at a local show on a whim on Jan. 5, 1978. Purchase price $4.00

Anyone else have a nostalgic coin they can add to the post.

I recall passing on a stupid BU Lincoln back around the same time for 50 bucks, I could of bought a roll actually. I thought it was silly, stupid and rather funny that the mint could screw up a cent. 1955 DDO.

Don't you wish you had bought 100 at that price?

    Nice coin.
I'm curious about the stars on the obverse.
They all seem to "reach out" to the rim.
Is that caused by die wear?

Yes, these coins were pressed without a collar, so over several thousand (or more) coins the flowing metal ate away at the edge of the die where the flow was concentrated at the tip of the star. I always think that it makes a coin look more older and more refined ;)

    Thanks.
    I find that quite interesting.
    Never seen one before.
Bust coins are definitely NOT one of my strengths.
But with over 50 years of collecting I would have thought I would have seen this at least once or twice, particularly in auction catalogues.
And it's so striking that I would have remembered.

I'm surprised as well since bust halves with drawn stars are quite common.

I'd agree the running stars and letters are found on probably half, if not more, CBH's. But wow! I only wish I were collecting in 1978 instead of attending kindergarten, because for $4 you couldn't very well go wrong.

The drawn stars are defiantly more noticeable on worn pieces, and this coin specifically has quite a high degree of contrast between the field and the worn stars.

I have some BHDs with very late die states that have this shown even more pronounced. Once I get my new camera and coin photo setup I will upload some of them.

Those stars are great , you're right they add a certain class to a already classy coin .

I was buying coins back then , only I was buying common silver dollars , WLH , Merc dimes , in other words a lot of junk . Hope our young collectors learn to save and buy the better coins out there , than lots of common coins .
