She’s beautiful in her own way, but could use a little help. Best way to restore a V nickel proof?

I found this tucked away in a lot of those junky 90s novelty sets, not even labeled as a proof just with other well worn Vs. Paid $20 for basically this coin and I want to get it certified just because of her rarity and awesomeness as a find, but I want to know the proper steps. Any help would be appreciated.

What are you seeing that makes you think it's a proof? I'm seeing a worn, then heavily polished, then heavily corroded circulation strike. If you're seeing square rims or other proof diagnostics, I'm not sure these photos are showing them.

 

That coin looks like it's been 'simonized'. No way it's gonna grade,

I think you’re right, gold maybe. Any idea at what point in history people most commonly did that?

 

I'm the new guy here and not trying to be a smart alac but do you own a red book? You could have bought one for what you paid for that coin. That coin has many problems and is not worth a dollar. Our hobby needs young blood but I think to often people tiptoe in,get burnt and never come back. This is a great hobby but knowledge first then great fortunes later.

 

To fool people like me lol. I still love it though and want to preserve it as best I can.

 

Can I ask where you got the coin?

 

Just leave as is. It is the best thing for that coin, your money and you.

 

I didn’t do it for fortunes, I saw at best a severely damaged oddity that would never be perfect and would never fetch more than $50 in the next 50 years. I wanted to save it from a crap existence. It could have been a carry coin through world wars, through depressions, at weddings. Even if it’s not a proof, it’s different and I like it.

I’m asking if it’s possible to properly restore, even somewhat, a tarnished coin like this. Doesn’t matter if it’s a proof or not. Don’t care about a grading. Can it be done or not?

After further inspection, it appears to be gold plated. But that’s not the question, I’m asking about proper channels for restoring coins

You don't restore coins like they were old cars. Original surfaces are the most desirable. That coins is at the point where anything you do to it can't hurt it any more. Try an sos pad or a wire wheel.
