    So first is a 82s, PSGS 66+.

What causes the white shadows seen under the date and stars?

    Part B is 1900 O, NGC 64.

What causes nearly all the date and stars to be dull white?

    Thanks,

It is called "pull-away toning" on the '82.

Fascinating. I am finding that term in some threads. The explanations seem to say the metal flow at a molecular level prevents toning there. But on the flipside, I guess (since there is no toning on the 82) it also prevents luster?

I'd say that it alters both luster and toning.

The dull white on the date and stars is die frost. The recessed areas of the die have a frosty texture, it wears off the small, relatively protected areas last. I'm not sure which step of the die preparation process imparts the frosted texture, maybe someone with more knowledge will post on this thread.

So.... a fatal flaw in googling “morgan frost” is there is a current NHL player named Morgan Frost.:banghead:
