Hello, New to the forums. I recently found a bag full of old US coins and I have no idea where to begin trying to figure out their values. I don't understand any of the terminology or anything. Was wondering where I could go to figure this out, or if I could post photos of the coins and maybe get some advice from people here on the forum. Thanks a lot, Jim
By all means post photos of your coins. Their value is based on their condition. A word of warning: DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COINS!!!!! BTW, welcome to CoinTalk.
how old would you say the coins are? you should probably organize them into denomination first, and then further from there. at least get them out of that bag.
I'm new at this but I would like to know about a penny i have it is a 1973 lincoln with pres Kenndy above the date I just want to know something about it thanks sue
Welcome you two; posting pictures is very helpful in I.D.ing your coins. Most digital cameras have a 'macro' setting that will get you quite close to the object, add a 10x or better loop to that and walla you have a close-up.
Pictures Hey guys, thanks a lot for the responses. Before I took pictures I was waiting for some replies as I didn't know if one could get an idea of value by not actually physically seeing them. I have a few, I will post pictures later today after I get off work. Looking forward to your responses. Thanks. P.S. Hobo -- coins are as they were given to me or how I bought them. I won't clean them, but just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want to do that? Does that take value away?
Pictures of Coins Hey all, Got the pictures uploaded. Additionally I have three Liberty dollars in a sealed plastic package. Pictures came out bad because of poor lighting and the flash made it almost impossible to make them out. They seem to be in excellent condition. Links are below to the imageshack full view image: 3 cent coin: Pennies: Liberty Dollar (I guess): Dollar coin: Just interested to hear your feedback as to the values. Not really interested in selling these, just wondering what they're worth and if they have potential to be worth more in the future.
The Morgan, if genuine, is worth about $200, the 3 cent nickel maybe $20. Other than that, nothing worth mentioning.
Something about the obverse of the morgan says to me that it's counterfeit. Without spending more time on the pick I can't say exactly where but the wear of the obverse and reverse don't match quite like I would expect. Maybe it's just the lighting, but I would ask for authentication before I would buy it. If it is genuine, I would say closer to $300 even though I hate to contradict GDJ.
You wouldn't be contradicting me, but realized prices on Heritage. The coin would grade VF IMO, and is damaged.
I was thinking VF-12 also, but it seems like the 1892 CC are going for way more than they should. The mintage is higher than 1883 or 84 but even in the lower grades they are selling for a premium. Maybe it's because the MS grades are more scarce, I'm not sure. However, the price deviation is there.
OK, got me curious now - where are you looking for these prices ? From Aug 3 to Jan this year Heritage has - $195 - $184 - $230 - $172 - $149 - $201 - $172 - $218 - $184 - $138 - $147 - $230 - $161 - $207 - $195 And that is for grades ranging from VF20 to VF30.
2009 Red book, Numismedia on line price, pcgs on line, and at my local coin dealer. Although I have seen that the only coin I did see on Heritage is going for $230 in VF (ICG graded). The 1883 and 1884, which both have lower mintage, are going for half that in the same grade.
On heritgae, an 1884-CC graded by ICG MS-60 is currently going for $80, but it does have 2 days + left.
