Bank troubles...

Discussion in 'Coin Roll Hunting' started by Nicholas Mullen, Feb 18, 2020.

  1. I'm new to collecting and intent to my bank and asked if they had any half dollar or dollar rolls and they just seemed very obstinate. The lady then outright, without me even asking, said they dont order boxes. The woman next to her was nice and tried to be helpful but the other was quite disheartening. Where should I go and do for coin roll hunting? It's kinda infuriating that some people act so smug without even giving me the light of day, and the fact I have an account at the bank.

If it were me, I'd switch banks. But I'm kind of a horse's butt sometimes.

  4. I just switched banks about a year ago and dont feel like going through the process. Should I try a different bank? All they gave me for advice was to go to the mall and ask around the vendors but I'm not an insane hobo, just looking for bankrolls nobody is using or wanting.

Many banks don’t keep halves or dollar coins in stock. See if they can start with 10 rolls of nickels. I usually talk to to manager asking, ‘What can you do to help with my hobby.’
Sometimes it’s off to another branch or different bank.

My dad had to convince, cajole, and persuade the local Bank of America to order a box of half dollars. It was only through a reasonably close relationship with both tellers and manager that he was able to do so.

The best I can generally do is get whatever loose halves the tellers have in the drawer - they're generally more than happy to unload them all on me.

Complain to the bank manager. But first I would discuss it with them their policies. Even though you changed banks recently it may be worth it to do so again. You need a bank that can service your needs.

I am guessing with all the coin roll hunters out there, some banks are not wanting the continual order and redeposit issue with all the coin rolls, especially half dollars. Look around for another bank that is friendlier.

Banks are getting fed up with people using them to supply boxes of coins just so people can search them for silver and/or varieties only to "dump" the remainder back to the bank. And, don't try to justify it by saying that you use another bank to "dump" the remainder. 1 dumps at 2, 2 dumps at 3 and 3 dumps at 1. It's all the same. ~ Chris

I've found that dumping halves is a lot more acceptable if you deposit the coins into your account, and only do $50 max at a time.

  12. Well I didnt ask to order any, I just felt her obstinacy was very unjustified, because never asked to order them, simply if they had any halves or dollar coins available.

  13. And I didn't justify anything, I think you assume too much. I understand ordering boxes and dumping them is a -Edited- thing to do, and is never my intent, I'd rather spend them when I go out if I ever did buy a box than just simply dump it to one bank, it's quite inconsiderate and not polite to assume from someone just asking a question.

    Please read the rules

Put yourself in the teller's position. I'll bet she is asked that same question hundreds of times every week.

Back in the 60's, I used to stop by an all-night diner on my way home after leaving the poolroom at 1am. Every night, the short-order cook would gripe, "Hamburgers! Hamburgers! Doesn't anyone eat anything besides hamburgers?" ~ Chris

  16. Sorry to say that's kinda their job. I work as a front desk attendant. If I got mad everytime someone asked for a room, I'd be fired. Sure it's annoying, but assumptions make an ass of you and me

It may well be a policy if the bank carries commercial accounts also. Since there is a fee they have to charge someone, and if that person has a commercial account, they get services above a savers account, and pays the fee for doing so. Also if the account is significant, they may do it for free also.

If there is a local company distributing food and drinks from machines, you might ask them if you can buy their bags of coins, although they are mixed coins. Most have a coin counter to check the bank when they deposit.

    Some churches also :)

  19. Thanks for the advice. I'll take that into consideration. I personally wouldn't want to buy a box of coins as I dont have a viable income to do so, but if i did it would be during tax time, and with a bank more flexible on their policies, and I should ask my boss at work who goes into the bank to pick up checks, and ask him if they have any dollar or half dollars floating. I work at a hotel, so I get all the small change up to quarters from banks regularly, it's just halves and dollars I can never find.

  20. And i did have an account there, but I never got to that because of how obstinate the teller was

  21. Also apologies for the remark, everyone gets heated, but rules are rules. But if I wanted to be patronized I would go to the local bar, not not a coin forum for advice. I'll be sure to watch what I say, regardless of the smartness of ones mouth.
