I'm not great at grading Ike's, but the strike appears to be really good...but I'd assume most of the silver coins were (since silver is softer than clad and these were meant for collectors). The fields are very clean and appear to be free of hits. So, I guess I'll say it's MS-66 or so. Might be a bit lower, might be a bit higher...I'm bad at these. But, the way I figure it...it's a very clean and well struck coin so it should be at least a 65. So, I'll go MS-66.
Well either way I did ok for the price. I'm hoping for a MS68 if it is 67 then it is not worth the submission price can buy a slabbed MS67 for less than the slabbing fee!
Nickelman, Here is an MS68 for comparisons sake. Personally, I really have trouble differentiating the ultra gem grades from each other and rely heavily on the TPG for a correct grade.
I don't even qualify for soapbox grading, but with Ikes, I always look at the eye - especially right under the eye. Lehigh's example has all kind of stuff going on around the eye and the other examples to a lesser degree. IMO, you might have a 68 - that coin has really nice fields and it doesn't have anywhere near the amount of "chatter" that the 66 and 67 examples do.
The key to these silver Ikes in high grades is LUSTER. The OPs coin looks clean enough to warrant a 67 or 68, but I can't tell how booming the luster is -- a 68 must have wonderful luster, in my experience....Mike
I absolutely agree with Leadfoot, a high grade for a silver Ike needs great luster. Looking at your pics, it is hard to tell how much luster there is. I've seen many great Ikes in regards to detail that just don't deserve an MS 67+ due to being dull.
My point is you can purchase a PCGS slabbed MS-67 for around $25 so I wouldn't want to waste the effort if it didn't have a clear shot a 68! I purchased it because I thought WOW when I saw it and not many Ikes give me that thought and clearly in my mind this is deserving of a 68 but I am not very good at grading other than eye appeal and this has great eye appeal.
I will give it a Ms 68 or may even be a MS 69 that ike has a very high relief strike ,and there are no bag markes present, and the eye appeal is stunning do to the strike a regestry coin probably. The 72 Ikes are very hard to find in that condition as far as a great strike one of the best Iv'e seen a beauty indeed. Jazzcoins joe
