When I scan my coins, is it better to use a white or black background?

It just depends on the look you want. Sometimes with gold black looks better, at least IMO. But black and silver or copper coins just doesn't work well for me.

I personally find black works best against silver only for contrast and the rest work well against white bit that could just be how my camera likes things

I use black background for Silver, Nickel and Aluminum coins and all the rest looks good against white background IMO.

I use white all the time. I think it makes you focus more on the coin itself. The black gives a border that distracts me.

Black - I got a headache using white background as some white color has different contrast of yellowish, blueish hue so I gave up.

I agree with diocletian, it's best to take pictures of your coins. Scanning them doesn't capture their luster or natural look at all, even if it's very clear. Scanning just shows how much wear there's been = \

I would experiment with some different colors. I can get some great results using blue backgrounds with copper and pink or purple backgrounds with toned coins.

    Hello everyone,

I am trying to scan an 1787 Massachusetts Penny, I have tried White and Black, played with contrast, etc. Keeps coming out horrid. Details are not good at all, and the coin is very dark. Any suggestions as to what i can do to fix this, other then buying a camera. Pockets are very swallow right now.

    Regards,
    S

I have read that a grey background works very well in photo,s. I have not tried it with scans though.

Jim since Black, white and gray are not working I just might do that. I did fiddle with the brightness/ contrast a bunch and got somewhat of a resemblance and tried to upload it to photobucket, and there site is acting up now:headbang:.

I just was to show some darn coins, geeeshh:desk:

I know this thread is about background color for scans, but it got me to thinking what a coin photo would look like when presented on some other color than black or white. This is the result.

Personally, I kinda dig the royal blue, but I still like the white since it is the least distracting.

Pastel Blue.. Now that I like.

Red. is out, a certain ebay seller always uses red, which I like because I know not to go and look at the coin

    Purple interesting

Black. well its alot like white isnt it. Its Black. LOL..

I always liked a cobalt blue background and after looking at Lehighs colors the darker blue is the way to go . JMO
