Picked up a 2007 $25 in a MS70 NGC holder. There's a local gold & silver shop that contacts me when they get neat stuff and I usually offer a 5% premium over spot. I'm quite happy with that low markup on this one:
I paid $9000 for this FDC Diocletian AV Aureus struck at Rome Mint in 286AD. The coin was from CNG/ Triton V But, even today I am happy I got it, and look at it every week.
That Diocletian really is a stunner. I am not familiar enough with the market in ms Diocletian solidii to know what these should run. It's a very pretty coin. Also in mid-2019 I bought an mint state solidus, however it is not as perfect as your Diocletian. Still it's of a slightly better emperor and I got because he lost the battle of Hadrianopolis which I talk about in my classes on Roman History. It's a solidus of Valens. However, it doesn't keep in the theme of this general thread as I think I got it "relatively" cheaply ~2K.
Your Valens is very nice/ same reverse as my AV Solidus (Valentinian I) The Diocletian Aureus was a rarity (FDC) grade. CNG hardly ever gives out that grade. That same coin sold in NFA auction back in late 1980s for 33K. Recently, a similar ex. sold for 65k. Seems prices on MS solidi are going up big time.
Thanks. CNG coins are very hard for me to get. I have an Ungood experience at their recent Triton sale this past January. I used either their App or the website to bid as they charge an extra 5% for phone bidding. Basically I had the high bid on a coin well prior to the sale but was out bid at the live auction. Using their website, I bid again and was outbid at 5.5K. I really didn't want to go to 6K but then I decided to and bid. However during my bid, it didn't post: they closed the lot and gave it to the other bidder at 5.5K. I was a bit surprised as I was in the middle of actively bidding on the piece and I did click the 6K bid button. There was no warning or anything. I guess these "cheap coins" (<10K), they don't worry about so much as they've many 6 figure pieces? My solidus came from a European auction (Leu Numismatik) so no slab of course. Also for some reason Eves (Yves) over there is always helpful & pleasant to talk to. Maybe they have me confused with a big name dealer or something?
I may have paid up for this one a bit. Lifetime issue drachm almost perfectly centered with great strike and surfaces.
