Why are 82 and 83 coins typically listed for more in places like the Red Book?

Their mintage is not low, they are not old, they are not of a different design but yet they are pricey.

    Quarters for example. 81's are $1. 82's are $3.50 - $7.00. 83's are $10.00 - $21.00. 84's are back to $1.00.

    Does anyone know why?

mint sets were not issued at the time, leaving higher quality coins of those years very hard to come by now

The US Mint did not make any mint sets in 1982 or 1983, Therefore, if a collector wants uncirculated coins from 1982 or 1983, they would either have to buy the coin from a roll (or buy the entire roll) or buy a US Mint Souvenir set and hope the coins are nice. I had the opportunity to look at several 1982 souvenir sets recently at my neighborhood coin store and most of the Philadelphia minted coins would be lucky to grade MS 62 with some of the coins almost looking like they were circulated. The Denver minted coins were much nicer and I chose a nice set for my collection.

PS: Looks like Spider beat me to the reply:rolleyes:

    Ah, no mint issues.

I did not know that (obviously).

    Thanks!
