I was looking at this coin on numista and it doesn’t show a smooth edged version or a outlines 10 version on there anywhere. What is this? UPDATE: I have another one WITH the reeded edge for comparison but it also has the 10 outlined instead of solid like the others
Wikipedia says (10 Yen) "10-yen coins issued between 1951 and 1958 have reeded edges, while 10-yen coins issued from 1959 onward do not." I think this one is 1984
Here's a reeded and plain edge side by side for comparison. (mine) Left: Showa 56 (1981), smooth. Right: Showa 27 (1952), reeded. It looks like yours are Showa 59 (1984) and Showa 29 (1954).
The coin posted as a reeded edge looks like Showa29 (昭和二十九年) or 1954, so that one should have a reeded edge. As already mentioned, the other one dates Showa 59 (昭和五十九年) or 1984 so it should have a smooth edge. The smooth or plain edges for the 10 Yen began in 1959. Everything dated before that will have a reeded or milled edge.
I was on a job in Japan in the 1980's and noticed this in some vending machine change. I asked a few of the locals about it, but no one cared...
I still haven’t had the chance to make it out of my country but hopefully someday! I can’t wait to collect coins in another country for the first time.
I haven't been many times, but working on a job in Japan, I went into a department store and found the coins department and bought a coin.
