hi everyone--i have three of theese im not even sure they are nickels--i do not know my coins--lol--all three are dated 1883---what can you tell me about them--any thing would be great --thanks
It appears to me that you are showing 2 different coins. The obverse of a Morgan Dollar & the reverse of a Liberty Head 5 cent piece
Yes, they are 5 cent coins as designated by the V. The V was changed to a 5 shortly after this because people were putting a thin plating of gold on them and passing them as $5. Frank
If they are all 1883 then they are the 1st year of the Liberty Head Type without the word CENTS on the reverse. Guessing from the pics they are worth $5.00- $12.00
The Liberty Nickel Series, also known as "V Nickels", ran from 1883 to 1912. In 1883, the reverse of the nickel did not include the word "cents" on it. As a result of this many of the nickels were gold plated to pass as five dollar gold coins. So, during that year, the Mint changed the design to have the word "cents" added throughout the rest of the series.
