we have 9 more coins here 1884 and 1889 please tel me which one is the best in your opinion from each year and if you see any rare varieties or dies or what not in other words your expertise
Wish I could help , but not to good with circ. Indians , still nice finds for a wheat bag though .:hatch::hammer: rzage
In my opinion only I would rank the 1884 with coin 2 the best and then coin 1. Both of those look problem free. On the 1889 I would pick coin 2 first as the best - lightly cleaned, but still nice. Those are the best coins because they look like they do not have corrosion. And no I do not see any rare varieties. There is one on the 1884 where there are digits below the date in the dentils. On the 1889 there is one repunched date and one double die reverse listed in the cherry pickers guide.
thanks you can always speak freely about any of my coins  my head was splititng over coin 2 and coin 4 in 1889 ( lot more detail but copper disease)
thanks you can always speak freely about any of my coins  my head was splititng over coin 2 and coin 4 in 1889 ( lot more detail but copper disease) Spock, Is patience part of your mantra? The green goo, verdigris, is like cancer. It grows.
Well coin 4 in the 1889 does have more details, but I personally like plain brown coins the forth coin is too dark plus the problem. If I was you I would certainly see what could be done to get the green gunk(verdigris??) off the coins. 1884 and 1889 are common dates and I do not think you could hurt them. Send a PM to Jim and how he cleans some of his found IHC's - I do not think it would hurt. I would certainly leave the 1872 alone.
Jim's gonna tell ya to use hydrogen peroxide. I'm gonna tell ya to use Biox. Both will change the coin forever. Not doing anything will change the coin forever too. So take your pick.
spock - do you ever remember what you read ? I ask that because it has been discussed here so many times. But perhaps you never read those threads. Anyway, the hydrogen peroxide that Jim uses has done wonders on some of the coins he has dug. But it is a harsh chemical and like any harsh chemical they change the coin - forever. Biox is the same. But if you leave it alone the verdigris grow and continue to damage the coin even more. Once the verdigris is removed you will see little pits from the corrosion, so if left alone and it grows there will be more of them.
ok now tell me where do i get this biox or hydrogen peroxide. i have decided to take the plunge. what else should i keep in mind?
Biox can be found - HERE, Hydrogen peroxide can be found in any drug store, you may even have some in your house. It is used to cleanse wounds. As for what else to keep in mind, the coin may end up a funny color afterwards.
no no i meant likeus ea separate dish wear gloves dont dip more than one coin in one dish before throwing the solution out anything like that?
No, I would never own such a coin so I wouldn't have to worry about it. But then you got it as a gift - that changes things. You wanted info what would remove the stuff, I gave you that. But since I have not cleaned a coin since I was 7 years old, and learned it was no-no, I have no actual experience at doing so. You'll need to find somebody else for that. All I know is what to use and what those things may do to the coin afterwards.
something tells me it will be a long time before i reach the lincolns. ok anyone here ever clean their IHC ( jim should be coming shortly but anyone else) and by cleaning i only mean the green stuff. for those of you stillinterested in the coins here is part 3 http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=40222
