I am contemplating the purchase of a likely Randall hoard large cent and wanted to get some opinions on this one. I'd like to hear some thoughts on it first and then I'll give my opinion on it. Thanks for any comments in advance. It's in a PCGS MS 63bn holder.

I like 3/4 of the coin but the quadrant to the left of the chin up to the left of Liberty (~8 o'clock to 11 o'clock) bothers me. Is it a stain or a large spot (maybe two large spots/stains)?

I don’t like the stain on the left at all. Walk away there’s better out there. Not a rare date

Definitely Randall hoard. The stains confirm it. I don’t like the haziness of the reverse. If it is prices at 61 money or lower, go for it. If not, wait for a better specimen.

I love the color and luster on the obverse. The stains are a bit on the heavy side.

There are a lot of much nicer Randall Hoard pieces out there. Hold out for one with better eye-appeal.

My Randall hoard cent. It is graded 62, but I paid 63 money for it. One of my favorite coins!

I don't like it either. I couldn't live with that tobbaco juice stain or what ever it is in the left field. The reverse looks like it might have some environmental or corrosion issues on the edges. However that might just be the picture. I'm done with problem coins. Early on I made a lot of quality compromises so I could get the dates I wanted at a price i could afford. I regret that now. However it is a buyers market and price is king. Offer AU money and don't be surprised if you get it.

Thanks for the comments everyone! My thoughts on it were this: I find the staining to be distracting and annoying, however, I suspect the staining on the obv is oil staining and residue from being in the barrel of oil in the hoard, which is kind of neat for the provenance. I could buy it for $650 and was debating between distraction/attractiveness and story. At the end of the day I think I prefer a much more attractive coin for a little more money. Thanks for confirming that thought!

I’d pass at the grade on the piece of paper.

I don't like the coin due to the way it looks.

Overall, not a bad example despite the stains. As already mentioned I would be in for AU money and no higher.

She's a bit rusty looking to me. I'd pass.

Remember, buy the coin, not the slab (ad nauseum). Plenty of better looking coins at reasonable prices. Pass on this one!

I dont care about what's on the slab, more of a question on the staining- assuming it's from the original hoard oil

I would recommend this one. You can contact them from their website and see if they would offer a 10-15% discount from the eBay price. That would be a very fair price to pay for this coin. It has very nice colors that are typically only seen on Randall hoard cents, and the variety is one of the Randall hoard varieties.

I agree that the stain is distracting.

Thanks for the link. I've had that one in my watch list for a little while. I think I may just wait until the worlds fair of money in August. Its close enough for me to go this year and I think it would be wise to buy copper like this in person.

Absolutely! Many have corrosion spots that might not be obvious in pictures. Even straight-graded MS
