Good pictures. It appears to be a hit. The next to the last picture shows striations from the NE and the shadowing shows it to be incused from that direction with metal migration to the SW.
A couple of those photos look like a die gouge. and atleast one of them look like a hit/damage. Is it raised? or a gouge?
When I was rotating it around under the scope to get the best lighting possible, I couldn't see any gouges incused below the surface of the field. Also, at either end of the mark there seems to be an absence of any metal to coin marks. The ends seem to be like a mountain on a flat open range, I.E., no bulldozer tracks were left while constructing a mountain. I have strongly considered all responses and believe it to be PMD though. Much thank's,.........Martha
The problem with extreme close-ups from a microscope is that you can't tell if the image is raised or recessed. If you have a Morgan silver dollar, zoom in on the letters of LIBERTY on her head. You'll see what I mean. It's deceiving. You should have added the additional photos to your original post instead of starting a new thread. Oh well! ~ Chris
Thank's for the advice Chris. I wasn't aware that was possible. If needed in the future I will....Martha
I do know what you mean too. When looking at a 5 dollar gold piece for example, even though the devices are incused into the field, even under 5x handheld magnifier it sometimes goes back and forth whether they are incused or raised. An optical effect for sure.....anyway, back to the hunt.
