Just got my 5 proof sets today. Dissapointing, but I think I found a die crack on the Bison Nickel. What do you guys think? Note: The plastic case has been removed to get the best scan.
Hard to tell From the picture, its difficult to tell whether the line is raised or recessed. If it is raised, I would say that it is either a gouge or a crack, but would lean toward it being a crack because of its point or origin, and the fact that it extends to the rim of the coin. Steve
Plastic case has been removed?!?! How? I opened a proof set once to get at the singles, and it is hard, messy work. I guess you are committed to a caseless set now.
No. It's very easy to remove the plastic cases withour breaking them, but you must have some fingernails or a knife. If this is a die crack or spike, does anyone know how much this could be worth?
Hard to say, but from the picture it looks like a just a regular mishandling type scratch. What bothers me and why I say that is if you look closely to the rim area, it does not go all the way across the rim, I guess a die could develope something like this, hard to say--But with available evidence, I say a scratch, I hope I'm wrong BTW, worth? exchange the set with mint...OR if you think otherwise, submit it to NGC or PCGS see if they body bag it or they give it an attribute--
Is it raised or recessed? Recessed it could have been struck through something, a string maybe? That is fairly common on proof coins. Doesn't usually add to the value unless there is a significant area of the coin affected. That would be my first guess. Raised, it could be a die scratch or maybe a crack. Neat!
If the line starting from the E and ending on the rim is a bump of an added metal , then it is a die break, a mint error.
