I don't have any plate coins. But I just wanted to say that I really like this portrait. Makes Vespasian look more regal and less portly.
Nice. I've got a Vespasian tet as well... Vespasian (A.D. 69-79) Billon Tetradrachm of Alexandria, Egypt. 26mm 11.98 grams Obverse: Laureate bust right, LB in front (Year 2, 69-70 A.D.) Congratulations with rare coins! There were some tough bidding rounds on that part of the auction for sure. I watched with awe and popcorn as the plate coins and unique coins went by, while waiting to snipe a few of the later coins myself. I was very happy with my winning bids, but no plate coins or especially splendid coins for me.
Yep, the unique and rare Alexandrians always bring more bidders than I'd like. I bid hard for one such tet but didn't come close. A couple others will be coming home to me though .
Congrats, @Orfew, a nice coin! No plate coin for me today, I watched in awe at some of the prices - here's one from an earlier auction: Egypt, Alexandria, Diocletian, AD 284-305, BI Tetradrachm c. Great pickup @Orfew ! I agree, some very high closing prices, I got shut out today. I put in (what I thought was) a very strong bid for a spectacular Lucius Verus tet, but I wasn’t even close. Anyways, here is my only Dattari plate coin. Commodus, Alexandria, BI Tetradrachm,(24.2mm., 10.19g), circa 183-185 (RY 24 of Marcus Aurelius), Laureate head of Commodus right/ Rev. Looking forward to see you posting them here then I was totally bottom-feeding. Every time I was the highest bidder, I though «oh, no, why did I buy that coin...», but in the end I felt very accepting and happy with my new coins.
Congrats, great looking coin with nice surfaces. I think it is the same make and model as mine. Vespasian Alexandria Tet, LA 69 AD later part of 69 AD, RPC 2401, 12.9gm.
Nice adoption, Orfew. I missed my ex Dattari target yesterday, but happily, someone else here picked it up. Of the 13,000+ coins illustrated in Dattari-Savio, how many I wonder are now owned by CoinTalkers. Still not enough to make a ripple in the proverbial ocean, I bet! A very nice target of opportunity, @Orfew! I definitely see the appeal of the portrait. Erm, that would be me I believe. I was happy to learn I didn't outbid you directly and it was some other underbidder I stepped on! Contemporary counterfeits of Roman provincials from Alexandria are extremely rare, and have fetched high prices in CNG auctions. (Actually it was one of these that @TIF was famously Clio'd on.) There were four(!) Alexandrian counterfeits in the auction that are also Dattari plate coins, and certainly from the Luxor hoard Newell found in 1908. I accidentally ended up with two. Let's talk, Z? Egypt, Alexandria. Dattari. Nero, 54-68 Tetradrachm circa 64-65 (year 11), contemporary counterfeit produced at the time of Hadrian. 24mm., 12.48g. Radiate bust r., wearing aegis. Rev. Very nice Andrew! And a great coin to boot! I have a few 'plate coins', this is one of my favourites. The RIC 49 plate coin. Acquired from Ephesus Numismatics, December 2005.
We have shown Dattari coins before and I have added no new ones. However I have subtracted one. I was in denial about my Julia Domna being a fake and that denial was made worse by the fact that it was a match to the pencil rubbing in Dattari Savio. It all came crashing down when CNG sold the mother coin. In all honesty I can not prove which was used to make the D-S rubbing but only the top coin below (white background) is genuine. The dealer I got it from is dead. I do not know if he was fooled or a crook but it makes no difference.

The coin is totally animal-friendly. Nilus is actually seated on some rocks, and not the crocodile. The crocodile is climbing up the rocks beside him. It looks reasonably well-fed.
