High-end AU -- 55 or 58. From the photo it looks like the luster has been impared too much to go MS by any (reputable) TPG....Mike
agree with spock.....with these pic's 55-58....appears to be slight wear above eye and less feather detail than a typical MS barber quarter....beautiful coin nonetheless
ok, spock and all of the others, here are my feeble first attempts at more pics. I tried as hard as I could to get pictures that showed the luster and the cheek so that you could whether or not there is a break. Every time I tilt the coin, I have a hard time focusing the camera, but I am learning pretty quickly. I will try some more if these aren't satisfactory for master spock.
Mike: Very nice coin, and a very scarce one. Nice low mintage, of 704,000. I try to buy every one that is properly graded and fairly priced. My best is an AU-55, but I believe that yours is better. If not for the hits on the cheek I would go unc. Therefore, most likely AU-55 or AU-58.
Oh, so that itself doesn't indicate a grade, they just generally go along with an AU coin? Still not quite sure what the difference is between one of those and an ordinary ding.
okay, so, I am very picky. Perhas no difference, just in the eye of the beholder. To my eye, and remember, I wear glasses, the hits look like circulation marks. I'd still rather have a nice AU-58 than an ugly MS-60. And this coin is NICE! I give--- call it an unc. But, I wouldn't pay more than AU-58 for it.
remember that these pics were taken with magnification waaaay beyond 10x to be fair since I have the coin in hand, I will tell you this: The cheek marks are one the 2x2 and the field marks are on the coin.
For my personal collection, I totally agree with you on the nice AU-58. It is nice, too. Most barber coins I've seen have been cleaned or messed with in some ways.
The best picture taking method, in my opinion, is to lay the coin on a white sheet of paper in moderate light with moderate contrast. Try that. I mean, out of the 2x2. Just be careful.
By the top picture , my last guess was AU-58 , it could go MS , but with pictures it's almost impossible to tell slight wear from a weak strike , still a beaut of a coin . rzage
