Mine arrived today and are disappointing overall. A couple good coins in each set, BUT a few really bad coins, Scratches on the fields and frosted coins have deep scratches in them too!! I think that the mint needs to go back to either having proof coins packaged by hand with gloves or watch the auto machines a bit closer, Inspection needs tightening up too. I have the microscope out and will now inspect them closer, I give them as gifts so order 5 a tear 1 for me and 4 as gifts. I guess down the road time will tell on quality.
I also recieved my Set yesterday. I guess I was lucky, their is not one scratch on any coin, they are very cleanly struck. BTW-My COA states "Each coin is struck at least twice" course that don't make it true!!
I have decided to keep the set, open it and the dime will be going to my Waitress connetion at the local truck stop, I have already reordered I recieved the order confirmation but no shipping confirmation yet, Im beginning to think that this maybe another year like last year. Rick
You know it isn't so much returning them as it is HAVING to return them, It takes forever and the reason I order early so to hopefully get some decent strikes which I was able to do up until the last couple of years.
Just a comment here - ordering early has no impact whatsoever on the quality of the coins you will recieve. This is due to the fact that the mint changes the coin dies continuously - from the first day they start striking the coins until the last day.
Well, after reading this thread so far I guess I should consider myself lucky. I ordered 3 proof sets and 2 were pristine--just perfect and what I expected from the mint always!. The 3rd set however disappointed me somewhat because of the SAC. On one side it is perfect, obverse she looks like she got chickenpox. Water spots all over, I believe I see some type of corrosion, unfortunately the picture does not show the flaws as bad as a 10x mag, but milky spots all over real bad, like the water they used was dirty.. Anyways I played the return game last year also with 1 set, it took 2-3 months to get the replacement . Now if I return this guy I got to go to post office, pack it, pay shipping, insurance all for a dirty sac? hmm, maybe I'll bust this one open, send the quarters to NGC for slabbing see what comes back, the nickels are awsome, the dime looks perfect, now that penny, looks like old abe got a shave, very poor strike..hmm I'll have ta mull this over some more I guess..
I haven't examined my set closely (just came today), but it looked good at first glance. LOVE the Nickels even more than I thought I would.
ALL of my nickles are PRISTINE and Beautiful, I have watermarks all over 1 dime and Sac in separate sets, Scratches from the Rim out on many coins. And you are correct on the return hassle and the costs. They make plenty of money extra by adding that delivery charge to all orders. Just like some on E bay, The other night I was going to spend over $$100 on a single penny and then seen a $10 shipping fee~ Well there went that bid. In fact I am about ready to drop out of on line auctions because of Blatant charges!! The USPS charges $1 for your orders, no matter how much it is. Got my camera today and as soon as this old man figures out how to post I can post some pics!!
I just buy the state quarter proof sets. I'm not really big on collecting proof coins though I wouldn't mind having some. David
I must just be lucky. I ordered seven sets and the dime on one looks like it has a spot but it may be in the plastic. All of the other sets are pristine. I like the silver sets better kind of makes the proofs look sick. Of course I am so old that I can remember when coins were silver; loved that sound when you dropped one.
Received my proof ASE's today and am very pleased with their appearance. They are as close to perfect as it is possible to obtain in a assembly line plant. Great service in mail delivery.
My clad 2005 11-piece Proof Set arrived today and it's beautiful. I've looked the coins over very, very carefully and every one of them is extremely well made. I think the quality and care is beginning to show. I'm sorry a few other forum members have expressed displeasure about their sets, but I would promptly return them until the Mint got it right. I have nothing bad to say about my sets. The coins are completely blemish-free, very well struck, clean of any fingerprints, lint or other minute obstructions. They're very bright, crisp and a pleasure to look at. This is one set that is defintely staying in my personal collection. And, I must say that the 2005 nickels look superb in Proof condition. The obverse really flashes at you with all that open field and the reverse of the bison is as clean and magnificent as I could imagine. The coin that I'm really impressed with (even more than the Bison - and I've been drooling for the Bison for 6 months) is the "Ocean View" proof referse. Wow! The edge lettering is clean, the design is fresh and in proof, it really makes it pop! I think this is going to one my favorite modern coins, beaten out every so slightly by the Bison Nickel. Thank you, U.S. Mint - good job!
I am happy for those that have received such great coins!! I received notice today that my two shipments of ASE's have been shipped and look forward to receiving them. WHY two shipments? I have a subscription and then I decided to order 2 extras as gifts. I want to see if some are different or not!! Once again congratulations to those with beautiful proof sets!!
